X-type estate retractable boot cover
Hi all, I have a 2.2 sport premium estate with a retractable boot cover that needs re assembling. In short, the plastic cap on the left end broke so I removed it and have repaired it, but dismantling the unit meant that the spring that rewinds the cover lost its tension. I have all the bits and can see what needs doing, but am struggling to re-assemble by myself. Does anyone have a step by step instruction list to help?
Many thanks,
Mick

Try this
The 3 pop rivets at each end (two underneath and one under the 'unlatching ' levers), can be easily drilled out with the correct size drill bit.
Now the end caps can be slid off.
Wind the blind in by hand till it is fully retracted,
Slide the wound-up untensioned blind along in the casing so that it protrudes from the 'offside end' by 200mm.
Using the end cap fitted to the spring loaded end, wind some tension onto the return spring.
This is very awkward but can be done...
the correct spring tension is achieved with 18 to 22 turns
Be sure to keep the end cap and the spring loaded end in firm contact as you slide the tensioned blind back into the casing.
As the blind reaches the correct position the 'nearside' end can be positioned on the fixed end of the tensioned blind.
The tensioned blind should now be firmly held between the ends, each of which is firmly located on the casing.
Replace the pop rivets. (Two under neath and one on top)
Replace the 'unlatching' levers and press them home.
Remount the cover case in the car.

Sorry, I can't answer if it should be clockwise or anti-clockwise as I haven't had to do it yet. It's just some information I squirrelled away after reading it on the UK forums and thinking I may need that one day, although I'm sure it will become obvious which way to wind it (or not) when you try it as springs have a tendency to let you know.

Fixed it!
All and MJ, Thanks, I managed to fix the boot cover!!! The spring should be tensioned in an anti-clockwise direction so that the cover retracts into the holding case. I gave the spring about 20 turns, which is enough to allow it to retract without running the risk of breaking the spring. Anyone trying this should ask a mate for help as it is very difficult to line up the other end of the axle with the stub that it sits on in the other end cap, whilst winding the spring at the same time. I would also recommend having a rivet gun handy so that the end cap that you use to wind the spring can be secured straight away.
