compdude, overall, I don't think the X-Types suffer any more problems than any other car on the road. But, I will admit that the transfer cases are still an issue even with your car. As long as you don't hot rod the car, you won't have an issue. There's tons of people around that are still on their first transfer case with no signs of problems. Other than that, no major problems. The biggest problem a lot of people here have is that they are looking to upgrade the exhaust, intake, wheels, etc and the options are rather limited. So, as long as you are looking for little things to dress up or like the car as is, you should have a lot of long drives ahead of you.

If you want the car to run past 100k miles, it is time to get on the major fluid changes. Nothing is sealed for life, unless you want the life to be whenever it breaks. If you want things to last a long time, you gotta change the fluids
engine, tranny, t-case, rear diff, coolant, power steering, brake fluid, all need attention. Oil air and cabin filters and belts need changing etc,,
Take a look at the rocker panels at the A-pillars, and make sure rust has not started, and take some preventative actions there.

Your service should not be due until 80,000... despite what folk say... However unless you can verify that is was serviced according to schedule at 70,000 then go ahead and have it serviced.
At 70,000 the sparkplugs should have been changed... this involves removing the inlet (pretty sure its the inlets) manifolds.
The critical things to look for are leaking seals especially on the transfer case... these are no more problematic to replace than onn any other car... if replaced before leaks become bad a lot of grief and expense is saved.
The transfer case is not the problem that most folk seem to think provided that the car has been serviced at regular intervals and that the car has not been towed with two wheels on the ground... if the car does need towing it should be on a flatbed truck with all four wheels off the ground.
If you suspect that the transfer case has lost fluid.... it only holds 600ml... then have it attended to using the correct oil. On the UK Jaguar Forum, http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/index.php
someone made a great post on changing topping up the oil in the transfer case, complete with some great pics.

for me the 2002-2003 are more appealing for me ,they have true awd system ...and when you purchase them most of the bugs have been irononed out
just remember it will last along time as long as you dont treat it like a drag car.....no launching ....but i must stress have your transfer case fluid changed ...i have a write up
also your transmision oil ...basically start of fresh so you no everthing is done and then you can calculate when the next time for a fluid change ....
