RE: x type noises?? 02 2.5
Well I took the water pump belt off and ran it to make sure there was no noise. Then I played with the water pump pulley and the belt tensioner pulley. The belt tensioner pulley seems to be the culprit. So hopefully this will help someone in the future. If the sound deffinetly comes from the left hand side, there is no water leaking. Chances are very strong its the belt tensioner.

I have a 2003 xtype 2.5 built in september 2002 as an 03 with 36,000 miles bought it as a Select edition from a Jaguar Dealship in NJ. I have the same rumbling noise and have had my transfer case , and transmission replaced all under warranty.Still the noise persists and also in warm weather. They removed all belts and it still made the noise. My service advisor called me today to tell me that he has another 03 but a 3.0 with a customer stating the same thing.I drove another 03 2.5 on the lot and so did the dealer ship and it doesnt happen to them.I also drove a few 3.0 and all are quiet also. I contacted jaguar and they are going to send an engineer to listen to my car if they can`t fix it.they said it will be fixed . I hope they can because I love my Jaguar !

Have a friend with two rags and stuff them in your exhasut outlet pipe while you listen in the front. the back pressure will force the exhaust out in any crackes or weak areas.....be quick cause your buddies hand is gonna get hot fast...

Wouldnt that screw the engine up pluggin the exhaust?
"Your particular year has had a problem with the manifold gasket...one side could have developed a leak....depending which side it is (front vers rear) it can be an expensive job, especially for the rear since they may have to pull the engine out to get to it.... "
Why didnt you mention this before?

1. No, if your friend just holds the rags at the tips of the exhaust (not completely plugging it) just enough to create some back pressure so you can listen up front. Do this at idle...
2. I did mention it, count 8 post from the begining
"Could be one of two problems and without really hearing it, i'm gonna guess.
1- exhaust leak....(if it was an intake leak, your car would die at idle..and would run like crap at cruising speed). Check your mufflers, exhaust and exhaust manifold. i heard stories that the right side cat tends to crack...makes the same noise."
3. You never mention the year of your jag.

Check the topic header - youll see the year.
I have followed your instructions.
I finally took it to the dealer to see what they had to say. He said the noises (whine and sputter) come from the tranny. He said it was within normal range of noise. He said some range from loud to quiet depening. Acted as if mine was like medium.
Anyway not sure how accurate that is but I suppose Ill just ignore it unless it breaks or gets worse.
Thanx for the help.

I finally have had my car fixed . Everyone was wrong with all the guessing ! The engineer from Jaguar stopped by to listen to my Jaguar 2003 Xtype 2.5 and said to replace the Flex Plate. There is a TSB on it ( 2002`s & early built 2003`s) and the sound Jaguar has listed is a scraping noise in low rpm`s . That same week another customer stopped in(her`s is a 3.0) and had the same complaint. Both her and my car was fixed and it purrs like a Cat should !!!! So quiet it seems like I have a new car . The new flex plate I`m told has pie shaped cut outs on it as to reduce the noise that resonates from it.The old one was just a round piece of metal (solid) . Hope this helps !

The noise was how I would describe it as a rumling noise when you first take off in low rpm`s and you described it as a cha cha cha type noise . Turns Out Jaguar calls it a Scraping noise. The Flex plate I`m told is between the transmission and engine and the transmission must be removed to replace this part. I am not sure of cost as mine was covered under the factory warranty. It took them over 12 hours to replace it. Hopefully yours is still under warranty.

Its ironic cause that tsb was the one my local guy spotted. I had forgotten about it after callin the dealer and having them tell me that didnt sound right.
Im thinking my warranty wont cover it since its not a failure. What type of warranty do you have ehtxtype2.5? Was it a pain getting them to pay it?

A few comments.
(1) Any exhaust leak is likely to trigger a check engine light warning as the Oxygen Sensor will detect the leak. Excess oxygen in the exhaust will drive the calibration to overfuel as the ECU tries to keep the fuelling to Stoichiometric, up to a limit, after which the calibration will assume something is wrong and trigger the warning light. In practical terms this limit is quite low, and it is unlikely that you have an exhaust leak within the limits.
If the problem vanishes in cold weather - it is unlikely to be the exhaust because the temperature that the manifold reaches (between 600 and 950 deg C) are unaffected by the weather.
The suggested test (partially plugging the tailpipe to pressurise the system) is a good one. In general the backpressure between the manifold and the tailpipe is roughly 1/3 bar, or 2/3 bar if you include the converter. This type of test will easily double that and find any leaks that are not immediately apparent at idle / no load. The exhaust gas at the tailpipe is roughly 300 deg C, so please be careful....
(2) The sound of the problem - described as a chuffing or revolutionary sound, is really difficult to pinpoint and comment on. To help further I need more data. Here are some simple ideas (not a comprehensive list - I'm inventing this as I go along):
Does it occur at (a) idle (b) no load revving (c) only when the vehicle is loaded (d) a specific engine speed or speeds (i.e a resonance) (e) only when accelerating (f) only when decelerating / engine braking / coast down / over-run?
Try and describe the sound in more detail, including things that it does NOT sound like (i.e metallic ringing). Also try to eliminate the other noises from the list - i.e the driveline noise (you can easily identify this one; accelerate gently and listen to the whine and then just back off slightly - the whine vanishes immediately you remove the load on the driveline (very poor engineering.....)).
It seems to come from the left hand side of the engine bay - is this noticed when standing outside the car or when sitting inside (the engine bay firewall has various holes in it for the steering column, pedals, wiring etc and the facia is assymetrical acousticaly - so often the driver seat and passenger seat can detect different noises)?
(3) If you can hear the noise with the vehicle parked and the engine revving at no load, try and pinpoint it further. I've seen comments suggesting it could be in the transmission (based on the discussion so far, I agree by the way) - so get under the car (or to be safer lie down next to it) and see what it sounds like from that position. You could repeat your stick test, or use a piece of tube or, if you have access to one, use a stethoscope. Please take care - I don't know what moving parts (if any) are down there - I've not looked yet.
