X-Type Rear Diff fill plug
Hi, I just got my mechanic to see if he could refill my rear diff. He had to concede defeat as he didn't have a tool that could fit between the diff & subframe.(He has a pretty extensive tool collection) Does anyone know if there is a special tool you can buy to do this job & if so, where I can find one? I have a propshaft "clunk" when changing gears, filling the front transfer case & greasing the prop CV joint helped the problem some (I really can't afford to replace the propshaft!) So, I'd really like to get some new fluid in the rear diff - can anyone help?

LC, if you are looking to remove the plug to the fill hole, then like DPK points out, a simple breaker bar is all you need. May have to get a slight extension to make things fit properly.
If he is having a problem filling, I filled mine by simply putting a 6" (15cm) piece of tubing on the end of the quart/liter bottle of gear lube and then inverting the bottle and shoving it up in the hole near the differential. From there, you can squeeze the bottle to add fluid till it is at the level you want. They also make small hand pumps that you simply feed a tube down into the bottle and squeeze a trigger to force fluid through the pump and into the differential.
