Hi Everyone!
I've been browsing these forum quite fervently for the past several weeks, and was thrilled to see how helpful everyone is.
After researching, I found an 2004 X-Type 3.0 Sport (without the 2004.5 year engineering changes, I think). It seems in pretty good shape with 3 owners, ~87k miles, navigation, xenon, and host of other options. The rear tires are a different brand/tread pattern than the front, which I may soon change to match.
The owner finally agreed to sell it for $8400. Do you guys think this is too much? Also anything specific you guys suggest I should look for?
Thanks so much for the help!! Hope I can also contribute to this forum soon!

I usually check the big three car guides for pricing guidance: NADA, Kelly Blue Book, and Edmunds. NADA is what the dealers use to low-ball people that are turning in a car or to justify their high used-car-lot prices to sellers. Kelly is more realistic, but I find that Edmunds is usually most in line with fair prices that I see with private sellers and buyers.
Anyway, at $8400, it seems like a reasonable price. Go for it!

I say go for it. NOt an unreasonable price.
As for things to look for, the biggie is noise coming from the engine area/between the front seats. This will be the transfer case starting to go. That is a $3000 repair bill. But, other than that, most of the problems are fairly easy to take car of and won't kill you too badly. The other thing I would take a quick look at is to find the car when the engine is cold. Start the car and turn the A/C on as high as it will go (turn the temp down to as cold of a temp as you can make it go. Now, pop the hood and see if the fans are blowing a lot of air (hair should be moving on your head when you get your head above the radiator). If you don't get this, odds are the fan module is starting to go and will require replacement in the near future.

i just paid $6200 for an 04 3.0 sport (no nav) 103000 miles.
needed about $300 in parts...totally in love with it.
take a jack with you and jack up each wheel to check for large amounts of play...if you have an OBD2 scanner, take that and check for engine codes, any issues with the above mentioned then use that to get the price lower...but $8400 sounds ok...mine was cheap because it had some issues and the guy was desperate to sell.
good luck to you
AWD and 4x4 should have matching tires on all 4 corners otherwise transfer case damage can arise

Guys, thanks so much for all your genuine, helpful feedback. I think I've decided to purchase it, and will be picking it up later today!!
Can't wait to turn the ignition keys... :-)
Hopefully it performs well in severe, snowy conditions which are all too common in MI and MN.
Thanks so much again guys! Hopefully I can start contributing to this forum soon.

Congratulations! How exciting!
I live and drive my X Type sport in Minnesota all year round. I like the way she handles and I love to go fast even in the winter! Just avoid the potholes with the wheels. My 18'' have had a rough time with those potholes that sneak up on me as I zip along!![Icon Wink](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Congratulations on deciding to take the plunge! Hope you get years of trouble free miles on her.
You mentioned that the rear tires don't match the fronts. By chance, do the tops of the rear tires look like they are slanted in towards the inside of the car more than the bottom of the tires? If so, the bushings on the lower control arms are warn. Might have caused the tires to wear prematurely and the original owner just replaced the tires. It's not a huge expensive repair, but something something you would definitely want to address soon. There is a ton of info on that if you do a little searching here. Very common problem on the X. On the other hand there couold be a lot of other innocent reasons why the tires don't match up. Just thought I would bring that up as it is not something that should keep you from buying it, but would be a good bargaining chip to get a few hundred dollars more off the price. Good luck and let us know how it ends up.
