Default X type Trouble

Hey I am new to the forum. I just purchased a 2002 X type and am having a couple of minor problems. Whenever I do heaving city driving the car begins to overheat do to the radiator fans not coming on. They pretty much work whenever they feel like it any advice on why they work work at some times and not they not at all at others? Also whenever I start my car it idles rough like it wants to shut off for about 10 seconds then it runs fine. Tune up needed maybe??

There have been some reports in the past of the early models having difficulties with the fan relay module. Sometimes the fans will stick on or off, or intermittent as you seem to be experiencing. Usual fix its to replace the fan relay module.

RE: rough idle - Is it throwing any codes?

NOT JUST EARLY MODELS, BUT ANY YEARS. iM PUTTING A SET OF FANS W/MODULE AND NEW LINK LEAD IN RIGHT NOW FOR THE SAME THING....
ROUGH IDLE COLD.....VACUUM LEAKS, LIKE PCV HOSE, BRAKE BOOSTER, IMT ORINGS AND UPPER AND LOWER INTAKE GASKETS. SINCE IT GOES AWAY SHORTLY I WOULD SAY INTAKE AND IMT ORINGS. BUT DO EVERYTHING SINCE THEYRE ALL KNOWN ISSUES, AND WHILE YOU HAVE THE INTAKE OFF, PUT IN NEW PLUGS

I know good people here in upstate, but that does not help you. Probably best to take it to the dealer if you don't know of anyone. The dealer here in upstate is excellent, but expensive.

Yes, that is the only answer you will get from the dealerships. Jaguar doesn't sell the control module separately any more and the wiring harness on the new assembly doesn't match the wiring harness in our cars. The problem with the cooling fans is usually in the control module.
What I did was buy a fan assembly (both fans, shroud and control module) from a salvage yard. I removed the control module and swapped out my bad one. My fans were still good. I paid "$100 for the assembly plus I didn't need to wiring harness adapter. That is approximately 1/3 of the new price, plus with the new you have to buy the new harness adapter which I think was around $75.

I think I will go that route because my fans work fine they just dont turn on. I also encountered a new problem coming home from work. Whenever I am going down a hill or coming to a stop when getting off the highway the car shuts off on me. It kinda seems like it happens when the transmission is downshifting when I am slowing down. Any ideas on what could cause this?

Jay I had the exact same thing happen to me a month or two ago. Oddly enough I was on my way to the dealer to get my ABS tone ring issue fixed, so my ABS and CEL were on already. I came down a hill and was slowing to stop and the car stalled. It started right back up, then did it again twice more on the way there. I would put it in N and keep my foot on the throttle when I was slowing/stopped and that kept it running.

I told the dealer about it when I got there and they tried to replicate the problem after they fixed the ABS issue, but it didn't happen for them, and hasn't happened since then, so no DX was was made.

So it seemed linked somehow to the trouble lights, although this may be coincidental, I doubt it. Do you have any CEL's now?

Yes I do for the same problem. I got the CEL ran today. I also have a ABS light on. The code came back left rear wheel speed sensor or something like that. But I figure the car might be cutting off because it needs the throttle body cleaned or a tune up because it also idles rough at time and a lot of smoke comes out the exhaust. Its not to the point that it looks like a blow head gasket but just more than usual

My car continues to cut off but only when I am at a high speed and slow down quickly. Any ideas??

I really think it is something to do with that speed sensor. I know it doesn't really make sense but seems to be some type of link in the electronics that effects both areas. Best I can suggest is have that ABS issue fixed and see if the problem remains. Really, I found the ABS issue to be unnerving when trying to stop, so for safety reasons perhaps bump that up on your priority list a bit. Report back afterwards and let's hear how it went.
