If that's an "ouch" you're driving the wrong car.

I love my Jag. It is still an ouch, even if you plenty of money to spend (I do) it doesn't mean you want to spend it.

Guys, this why we have comprehensive insurance on vehicles!

I have a $100 deductible so that is all I paid. Doesn't matter if it was my X Type or my wife's PT Cruiser.

Smile Windshield replacement

Here in Ma there is no deductible for glass. When I had my windshield replaced it didn't cost me anything. I asked the installer how much if I had to pay for it. He said over $1000. By the way the no deductible applies on all the glass on a car. I had a rear window crack on a MB 450SLC I had and it didn't cost me anything and that glass cost more then the X type did. At the time back in 79 it was the largest rear window on any car.

Will comp pay if the glass is merely pitted badly?

Does anyone know if my newly acquired 2005 is likely to be prewired for the heated windshield? Mine is very badly scratched by bad wipers and is hard to see through at night and I want to replace it. I'd replace it with the heated version if the wiring was there.

Thanks!

brucelee, check your policy. It could be something you can negotiate with them as well. If it impedes your vision, it is a safety issue.

Here in MA the rule of thumb is if the glass in pitted of scratch badly enough that is obstructs vision, then yes comp insurance should pay for it. You should get a hold of your agent of insurance company and have them look at it. Also, there is another way, especially if the glass is "broken."

No, in 04 Jaguar offered the heated windshield as stranded equipment. When I had the windshield replaced on my 03 there were no provisions for windshield defrost, this is one reason the installer had a hard time finding the correct windshield. Because when Jaguar went to windshield defrosters wiring, the discontinued the not wired windshield. The replacement glass had was found in the UK and shipped to my installed, and the insurance paid for the whole thing shipping, install, the works.

Smile Trim

The next layer of trim, the plastic bezel type thing is holding up a little better, but I'm wondering if upon windshield replacement do they replace all the trim too?

I imagine the dealer would be able to, but not until they drained my bank acct. lol!

Do windshield shops install all new trim too?
As far as trim goes, when the windshield came in all the rubber gaskets were attached to the windshield, and when installing they are glued to the channel the windshield fits in. The rubber trim has channels in them that fit into the channels on the car. As far as the side trim metal work the installer used the old ones. He mentioned that aside from the problems of getting the windshield, the install was relatively easy compared to other cars. Its been almost 6 months and no leaks of any kind.

Thanks Adam. I found the black metal side strips, what I called the bezel, on this site.
gaudinjaguarparts.com

Their site is down tonight and I don't recall the exact price, but I think it was about $140 for the pair. With new rubber gasket trim on the new windshield, and these 2 bezel pieces, I think I'd be looking pretty good. But will have to add glass coverage to my insurance policy ...and wait a few months.

That being said, any of us could hit the fwy at 75mph with a new windshield and end up with a pit or crack from road debris that evening, lol ...on a different note I hear the guys with windshields that have become opaque with scratches and pits over the years. If it's at all difficult to see, it's a safety issue. A tip might be to remember to turn OFF your automatic wipers when it's not raining out! I do. The laser sensor doesn't know rain from a single drop of water.
