X_TYPE Handbrake problem

I cannot get the handbrake to work effecively
The calipers seem to work ok ie it pushes the piston back and forth, everything seems to move and operate on the disc, I have cleaned all the sliding parts
according to the mot man I get just about the minimum force required
the cable binds a little in its sheath so that the return spring on the caliper does not go completely back to its full position
the brake is obviously on at three clicks but with no real force, if i pull it up to five clicks it makes no difference
I have tried operating the cam mechanism on the rear of the calipers to take up any slack, this seems to function ok and pump the piston onto the disc but this does not get the handbrake to work any better, the only fault i can see is that spring does not pull the cam fully back
could the inside pistons in the caliper be faulty?, i have pushed them back in the past when i have had the caliper off and changed the pads
I have thought of changing the cable but i do not understand why when i load the brake with the cam mechanism this does not eliminate the effect of a "defecive cable"

Kevin, I had a problem similiar to yours. What mine ended up being is the e-brake mechanism on one of the rear calipers was binding up. This causes the equalizing bar on the output of the handbrake to rotate and give you that "soft" feeling. You can isolate the problem by simply pulling on the e-brake to as far as it will go and then climbing under the car. The side with the equalizing bar closest to the rear tires is your bad side. If you pull off the tire, you can see the mechanism move a little bit and then it will stop. I tried freeing mine up by lubing and whatnot and nothing helped. So, you are looking at a new caliper.
Do a once over of the cables just to make sure that you don't have a cable that is binding up. This is easiest done by disconnecting the cable from the "bad" caliper and then resetting the e-brake. You should see the equalizing bar shift the opposite way.
Hope this helps. Just for reference, a new caliper costs around $110 plus any fluids that you might need.
