Gooday! This site has mainly US participation and there are not so many people with the diesel XEs on it. The UK XE forum has a lot of diesel owners and will probably give you the info you need. But from what I have read, even though the diesel is a good engine for a diesel, that is a bit like saying that you've had a mild stroke - not very pleasant but it could be worse. Even the igenium 2 litre is prone to problems (there were teething issues which might have been sorted since), especially if you dont do a lot of driving, or at least regular long distance driving. On the UK site the participants seem to be swinging toward petrol engines, diesel seems to be more on the nose than it was a few years back. Diesel drivers tend to be more excited about economy than performance, though the igenium petrols are pretty frugal on a long run itself if you can control your right foot.

Other than the engine choice though, the 2017 XE is a cracker of a car, very reliable and beautiful to drive. Personally I would be looking for a 25T instead with the 250KW petrol engine in it. I sold our 2015 model which had very low kms for $35K AUD in 2019 when we went to the 2020 model (had been offered $31500 as a trade), though they might be getting a bit more for them now given the bump in used car prices.

The main issue that has affected some Ingenium engines is the timing chain. This is known to wear and can, if ignored, result in bad consequences. It is not a cheap job to replace, as the timing chain is at the back of the engine next to the clutch. The good news is that if you do get a problem, and bite the bullet of the cost, there is a replacement kit with improved chain and other parts. My XE has been OK so far, but I'm only on 30k miles, and not done much this year with the Covid19 crisis.
Like all diesels, you really do need to give it a regular long run to clear the DPF from time to time. If you go onto the website for the XE-specific forum, a chap there has described the issues, and he is a mechanic keeping some Land Rover vehicles on the road for a company.

Cheers both of you. Fraser would know more about the diesel. I've driven the 20T and it's a pretty good engine and probably a bit better match for the transmission than the 25T, just not as quick.

I’ve driven the 20t for 18 months from new and can say it’s a real drivers car. I didn’t go for the diesel as I would never do enough kilometres. When time permits go to the New Members section and introduce yourself where you’ll get a warm welcome.
