Default How many lawyers does it take to change a (brake) light bulb?

Well I cant tell you, because it was too hard for me to do.

So I was following my wife's lovely XE and admiring da booty (as one does) when I noticed that her driver's side (your off-side) brake light had blown. Strangely enough the manual has no index entry for that, so off to google I went and identified the bulb (w16w) and assigned my wife the job of getting it from the auto place.

No, they dont have them, you have to get them from Jag or a bulb specialist (sigh). So I contact the dealer thinking that if I have to go there to get the bulb they may as well replace it under warranty. Think again, warranty on bulbs only 12 months, and expect costs of $60 to $100 for them to change it.

So I'm thinking wtf!? I went up and got the bulb then took it home. You try changing one of these things. It looks complicated in the manual where you essentially have to get into an access panel and disconnect the brake light assembly then pull it out and work on it from outside of the car.

But what the manual doesnt show is that they have installed the fuse box inside the access panel as well, so buggered if I know how you get the light assembly out. And then when looking into that I happened upon a comment in the manual that you always have to replace both bulbs at the one time fml...I only had one bulb.

So by this stage $100 to change the bulb is looking pretty cheap, though it will take up to an hour and time is money for us hungry lawyers. Anyway I managed to get it done by them today for $50, sitting in a waiting room and listening to the opinions of some wannabe yuppie yapping on her phone who seemed to have no concept of privacy or discretion for that matter - probably an evoque driver I'd imagine.

I have no problem with Jag making it excruciatingly difficult to change a light bulb, but seriously if they are going to do that, it'd be nice if it was covered by warranty and even nicer if the quality of the bulbs would stand for more than 18 months use.

Austin7, now there is a battle I'd support you on...

I find it super simple to change either side of the bulbs. I can just undo the wing nut that holds it and pulls the tail light out easy. the odd thing is Jag decided to use a pair of these 16w bulbs instead of the standard single 32w bulb. That threw me for a loop for a minute. The blinker, stop and rev light all use the same bulb and you can get the anywhere I promise.
Just look up my thread here about doing the LED conversion, I did a write up to save you all lots of time and math.

I was told if you change any bulb to LED in the XE you will then void the warranty on the BCM so do so at your own risk. But if you just change the bulb to a standard bulb of the same 16w then you are fine. This is a poor statement as LED uses less power and long as you create the same resistance on the wire then the BCM doesn't know what type of bulb it is.

The BCM also has a built in protection circuit so JLR is also wrong about harming the BCM from a LED bulb.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like a real PITA

I agree on Evoque drivers...

did you have the fuse board inside the access panel? I couldnt even find the wing nut behind it.

Actually I had a look this morning and it looks as though the fuse board might have been relocated downward an inch or two giving a little better access to the taillight assembly. If that is right (I wish I had taken a photo before) it must have been done when they replaced the bulbs yesterday.
