After first 150 miles or so the tune has really settled in with the car. I do not think you can even imagine the car responds as though it is the same vehicle. You really feel like a new power unit has been bolted into the frame.
i ran a VAP tune on the v6 in my old ftype so I knew this was going to be exciting.
With the ECU Tune do i need to do anything else to the engine to support the additional HP or will the stock engine be fine?
Assuming that there's no pre-existing faults, the engine will support the HP in stock form. Remember it's the same engine that makes 400BHP in the FType, just calibration changes. So our 415BHP is still pretty conservative.

Hey everyone - I purchased a 2017 XE 35T at the end of last year. I wanted to check and see if the protocol for the VelocityAP’s ECU flash was still the same - flash computer gets sent, upload the standard config, then upload VelocityAP’s tune config. I thought I read somewhere that the protocol had changed at some point but I can’t seem to find that thread anymore. Anyway, thanks for the help. Looking forward to 400+ HP
Did this on my F-type. I believe it was MY18 (at least, for the F-type) that the interface changed. VAP is active on these boards, or email Stuart to be sure. Good guy.
Buy the tune, they send you the programmer. Read out the OEM tune, email it to them. Discuss anything special you’d like. They return a file which has both your OEM tune and the new one, both of which get loaded into the programmer. Load whichever one you like into the car.
Going from 380HP in the F-type to 415 (whatever the number is) isn’t a big difference, but it is noticeable. Changing the crank pulley would be a nice bump on top of that, but happy for now.

i have 2018 Xe 3.5. The ecu is the discerning factor. If it is a flex ray ecu you will need the CMD interface which is a box you borrow from Vap. If you are near central pa in the USA we have one. Otherwise VAP sends and retrieves one working with you. Earlier non-flex ray ecu should work with the hand tuner that VAP would send with your tune. That is the nicest situation as you keep the tuner.
You can check your ecu easily. Open your hood and find the snap cover below the windshield on the right side of the car. This is the passenger side in the USA.
Remove the cover and with a flash lite you can see the ecu mounted on the fire wall. If the serial number has FR at the end, you have a flex ray ecu and you need the CMD box from VAP. If not you have the older non- flex ray you can use the hand held tuner VAP supplies that allows you to toggle from stock to tune and back. I am posting pics of your ecu location and a photo of my ecu showing FR suffix. With corona virus alert we are pretty much at home so this early Sunday morning with our church service cancelled, I thought I would spend a few extra minutes on this post thus the photos. Btw the tune will wake up your motor, the tune and crank pulley will allow provide neck snapping difference. The car becomes smoking quick! Blue tape marks the ecu cover
Open cover Serial number label under large wire loom Ecu label serial number third row down. Look for FR at the end.

For a 2017 it should be pre-flexray. You can check the serial number on the ECU as someone posted below. Our new site will force you to choose MY so it will assign the appropriate tools.
The car is unreal, it spins first, it spins second. You have to roll into it to hook properly. It’s quicker than my ‘13 e550 to 60. It’s just awesome. I love the changes. VAP.... thank you for supporting this community. Just order it already. It’s worth every cent.

Glad you are so happy with the results! Did you do just the tune or the crank pulley as well?
Is business on these cars picking up as they come off-lease?
Hard to say. We track the sales numbers by engine vs. by chassis, but just looking at it and passing judgement, yeah I'd say the XE business is picking up.
Should be! I just picked up a 35t on sunday. Will be purchasing tune as soon as i get some miles under it to make sure there arent any existing issues. Cant wait

Hi Stuart
Does the tune and or tune + crank pulley have any effect on the sound? I test drove a 2016 XES yesterday and it sounded 'OK' but not great. Possibly because I'm comparing it to F-Types I've driven.

On my F-Type the tune by itself didn't really change the sound at all, but the crank pulley + tune made a yuge difference.
The exhaust note became just a little deeper and louder but suddenly I had masses of SC whine when I buried the right hoof when before there was almost none.
Apparently it's due to the tune that goes with the crank pulley changing the way the SC bypass valve works, it now opens much later and not as far.
I would guess it works this way on the XE 35t/S as well or if it doesn't you can ask VAP if they can incorporate this change in your tune.

This change would be made to all the tunes, even without the supercharger pulley so it's done by default, to prevent 'excess' boost being bled off.
I'm a little confused. Would a tune on its own change the sound of a (six cylinder) XE S or would I need to go the extra step and install the pulley to get more pops and crackles (along the lines of the sound of an F-Type)?
