Default Blacking out the XF

haven't posted for a while so posting some updates

Stock front

stock rear

combo of Dipping emblems and wrapping the brushed trim with Vinyl

Finished product

Vinyl wrapped the grey & grille surround, and the outer edge of the grille emblem

Didnt like the red so dipped the whole emblem and looks great

Wrapped the side vents, these popped out alot easier than expected

Not bad. Personally i wouldn’t do it to my black xf. I like the red accents. I plan to put yellow calipers to compliment my black and yellow plates too soon

I like it! I am wondering now if I could do this in satin black with my dark sapphire paint.

Looks good. I think I may add a little black to my car too.

absolutely, I had to add the glossifier to mine for the gloss finish on the lettering, the plastidip drys matte. The VVivid Vinyl comes in satin as well on Amazon. Super easy to peel off if you dont love the finished product. Mine is still holding up with no chips or fading fyi.

I like it. So maybe a Black Pack Sportbrake is not a must after all. This gives me food for thought.

My black '17 XF likes what you've done!
Currently, the brightwork chromeness of my factory build accents well against the Ultimate Black.
Great thread here!

Question Looking to Dechrome 2018 XF

Any suggestions on best blackout method to dechrome the window surrounds on my 2018 XF Prestige (Fuji White/Jet Interior)... Plasti Cote (?) or 'wrapping'. Is this something an owner do do them self (I'm pretty handy) or leave to professionals? Also would like to add side sill (rocker panels) and trunk spoiler ala R Sport. Purchased OEM parts on there way. Any thoughts?

Many thanks

Having used the spray dip and wrap for trim, I'd say wrap. They sell the roll for trim in a 20' roll (like $20/amazon.. Vvivid is who I use) and it comes the smaller widths so pick based on the tallest thing you intend to wrap. Make sure you have a sharp blade... strongly recommend getting a kit that comes with the blade, squeegee w/felt, and corner tool (helps with the tuck on the sides) to make things easier $7 amazon.

Did this to an XK I had.

Before

after wrapped the rear chrome above plate also

close up of wrapped top cover trim- gloss black to match paint

Close up of window trim- gloss black

did you need any special tools?

no, just lift on the front (pointy) end (CAREFULLY) and slide like an inch to the rear and it will start to detach. Just the surround comes off. I was eye-balling the replacement parts and saw the tabs on the back and gave it a try and it worked out. Good luck!

I will say with the Texas heat I've been having issues with the vinyl staying adhered in the letters- keeps unsticking, I've gone over it with a wrap tool on 100°+ days and it's fine until it's hot again- my only gripe. The black vents run $250-300 for the pair in all gloss black (Left T2H19535 / right T2H19532). If it lifts again I plan on trying superwrap (Spray Vinyl) before taking the plunge and getting the black vents.

Thanks for the reply!!

I noticed 2 sets of left and right gloss black replacement parts - (Left
T2H19535 / right T2H19532) and T2H19531 / T2H19534
Do you or anyone happen to know the difference?

Default Factory black

Looking good! Here's the ultimate black with black kit and factory rims. It does get quite a few double-takes. Going in to the shop 2 weeks from now for ceramic coating

My bad I missed this, not sure the difference but the parts ending in 5 & 2 are what show up in the parts catalog for black gloss. The others show up as the same when searched- maybe a union jack black gloss?

OK - another quick stupid question on removing the vents.
I have the new vents so I am looking at the clips in the back.
I can pull the front pointy side slightly away from the panel with a small flat head and seems that the clip is un-engaged.
When you said to slide it towards the back, Are you saying the whole vent piece slides towards the rear? or that I should work my screwdriver towards the rear popping out those clip pieces one by one?

Sorry if that sound stupid but I cant seem to work/slide the entire vent towards the rear of the car.

Finally got the black pieces done.
thanks for the guidance here as I was able to pop out the side vents myself and pop in the replacement parts.

Vinyl wrap front grill surround, replacement black gloss side vents, XO luxury wheels, 3M tint.

think it came out pretty nice.
