Question Considering a 2013 XF, new to Jaguar, would love advice

Hi there, I'm new and considering purchasing this 2013 XF

I've read up on these and really like what I've seen, but I don't want to go and look at the car without knowing what to look for. If there's a specific article, happy to read that. Otherwise would love tips on what to look for, value, etc.

There is a forum on this site (X250) for the model you're looking at where you'll find loads of info

What to expect....Water pumps tend to require more frequent replacement than other types of cars. Jaguar has never figured out why, but don't let any shop fool you into paying a luxury car repair premium as the pumps themselves are under $100 aftermarket and far, far easier, heck, several orders of magnitude easier to replace than on a v6 Honda. Just keep your eye on the coolant levels, pay attention to the smell and get it replaced immediately if you hear the bearing squeak.

We always tell people just plain don't buy a used Jaguar without maintenance and repair records. No records = no sale.

Now at 79K miles, its really overdue for some serious preventative maintenance unless those records indicate that its been done. Unfortunately the marketing department wrote the owners manual, not the engineering department so all this is not in there. Nevertheless, we've written our own maintenance schedule based on experience. Don't go 15K miles on an oil change, that's ridiculous and its thought to be the cause of timing chain guide premature wear on some Jaguars. Do 7,500 or every year at most. You can't change it too frequently, only not frequently enough. Also, its a direct-injection motor so there's no fuel spray to clean the crud off the intake valves from recirculated crankcase oil vapors. That means they really needed cleaned probably by 50K miles (and again around 100K). Next, the cooling system on most all modern cars is made from a stuff called PA66 nylon which should never have been used for such purpose because it is softened at high temperatures and accelerated degradation when reacting to an additive in Dexcool called 2EHA . They keep using it because cars aren't supposed to last forever and they expect most cars will all be crashed or rusted to oblivion before the nylon fails completely. However, we see in the AJ engine design certain points where the nylon attaches to the motor that it can heat up and over a shorter than expected time frame can cause the nylon tubes to fail. We recommend replacing the fore and aft coolant crossover pipes at the same time as doing the intake valve cleaning because removing the intake manifold provides the perfect opportunity for access. If all this isn't shown on the records as having been done, negotiate a discount on the price of the car and work a deal with an indy repair shop to do it all at the same time. A new water pump, new crossover pipes and intake valves cleaned, maybe $2,000 worth at an indy and this XF should be good to go for several more years.

Cosmetically, check the leather dash for signs that it may be coming loose around the edges or bubbling in the middle. Apparently Jaguars were made for cloudy England and when left parked outside in hot, sunny climates, the glue holding the leather on the dash comes unglued. Its very expensive to repair. I suggest if its still intact, pay for garage or covered parking during the day and use a reflective sunshade in the windshield whenever that's not possible. Just don't park directly under trees as that causes its own issues with deterioration of the paint, trim and body panels. Good luck with the car search.

Can the maintenance train of thought be applied to an x260 with a SC V6?

Hello mate,
Given that the OP's carguru 2013 X250 was the first year of the same AJ126 v6 as our x260's, yes.

The paint reflection in that first ad pic looks factory fresh!
Love the H2EA vs Nylon explanation..
Always wondered why so many coolant issues.
