I have a 2016 XF. 3L . d.
whenever I turn on the A/C system a foul smell is emitted, ( smell of rotten eggs ) especially when in “ cold “ range. Ie below 19 C .
There are 59,000 on the clock. My mileage is v small , in the 5-6000 miles a year , and my daily mileage is probably less than 3-4 miles . I realize this is paltry engine work and wonder if my low mileage is related to the smell emitted.
Any advice as to what may be causing this and what I might do to remedy it .
All advices welcome.

YOu need to get and use an air conditioning refresher. There are many suppliers, so here's an article on which one is best

You might have to use more than one can if it's really bad. Also, your use pattern is conducive to odour build-up, plus the damp climate of Galway. All you can do is give it a try, and as they say, apply a can every 6 months.

Also use A/C 'on' all the time to maintain the required temperature as recommended. In addition, cycle the A/C from maximum hot to maximum cold a few times a year to ensure air direction flaps and vents don't seize in the same position.

Common problem with all cars, you probably have mold in your AC system. Before doing any maintenance on it make sure the water vent tube is clear and venting properly or you'll waste your time. Just because you have water dripping out doesn't mean it's clear. You can get mold in the tube that only drips when excess water builds up.
