About a week ago I was about to drive to Manchester from Bristol. I checked the fuel gauge and it read just under half a tank. I thought it was strange as I was sure that I hadn't used the car much since I last filled it up. I went to the filling station and I could only put in about £20 worth of fuel before the pump shut off. When I checked the gauge it was now saying full. I did the trip and when I got back to Bristol I again filled the car up. Everything seemed ok so thought it was just a blip. I drove home with a gauge that said full (about 2-3 miles.) I came to use the car again the next day and the gauge read the same as when I was going up to Manchester (just under half a tank). Every time I have used the car since it has read the same.
Anyone got any ideas or experienced the same problem?
Your XF, like my XK, has a "saddle" tank. There are a few variations depending on specification but this diagram shows the general layout.
There are two level sensors and a transfer pump to maintain an even distribution of fuel. I think one of the sensors and possibly the transfer pump could have failed leading to the incorrect reading.

Thanks GGG for your reply, sounds a bit expensive if you are right. I will take it to my usual garage and they can possibly look at the problem
Thanks again for your speedy reply
The same thing happened to me when I had an '06 S-Type. Gas gauge was all over the place doing what yours is doing.
Luckily, it was under an extended warranty and cost nothing. Dealer service manager said it would have been $800 + - to fix it.
If you can remove the rear seat and find out which pump, you may be able to do it yourself and save a bundle. That is if the pumps can be accessed from the rear seat area.
Good luck.
I had a similar issue in my XJ and replacement of the level sensor/fuel pump (13 and 14 in in the right side of the tank) fixed the issue and that was over 50k ago
