Default Major Oil Leaks

In March 2018 I bought a 2 year old Jaguar XF (Jan 2016) with 15,000 miles. At the end of last year (3.75 years old, 25,000 miles) they discovered 3 oil leak as follows:

1. Front crankshaft seal
2. Timing chain cover
3. Rear main oil seal.

Jaguar dealer wants £1,500 to do the repairs. Do I have any case to make a complaint to Jaguar? This seems like a lot of problems for a car that was under 4 years old and has only done 25,000 miles.

Does anyone have any advice? I took it to a jaguar specialist and he speculated it was due to previous recall work on the engine balancer shaft.

Motor type? Are their drips under the car where you usually park? Have you looked at the under engine cover to see if it's saturated? Weeping oil at seal points is common.

Welcome to the forums Turgid,

You don't mention engine type and size .....?

However, I agree this could be considered unreasonable for any four year old Jaguar engine with only 25K miles. The standard Jaguar UK vehicle warranty is three years from date of first registration with the option to transfer and/or extend. Unless the extend option was implemented, mechanical warranty has expired. JLR have no obligation other than for the further 12 months covering any replacement parts used during servicing or repairs.

If you want to pursue this as a claim, the first thing a Jaguar Dealer will look at is the OSH (Online Service History). With the low MILEAGE, the vehicle should have been serviced on a TIME basis every 12 MONTHS. If this has not been carried out precisely as scheduled, then forget it.

Probably your only hope is the "previous recall work". Remedial engine work carried out by a Jaguar Dealer demonstrates a known issue and therefore the possibility of subsequent design related problems. You will need a Jaguar Dealer on your side to make any progress with this approach. Rather than looking for JLR to absorb the full repair, a contribution towards the cost could be more likely to succeed.

Graham
