Did a search and couldn’t find an answer so I thought I would ask here. We got our first notice of a software update for our 2021 XF which included the need to lock the car and I assume not drive it till done. In my other car, 2020 Volvo V60, software updates are done more or less in the background and you still can use the car while the update is applied, also it tells you what is being done, maps etc. Can anyone explain Jaguar’s execution of this? Where do I find what was updated and does the car have to be shut down for this to work? If you try and use the vehicle will it start? Does the update get cancelled and you need to start over or does it just pause? Thanks for any help here.

 

Hmmm... on my MY 20 XE the OTA software update executes while the engine is running and the instruction shown is NOT to shut the engine down while the update is downloading and installing. I then get a message that the update is installed but will be finally activated once the car has been shutdown and then restarted.
This process has worked for me for the last 2 or 3 updates that I have received OTA. Whilst the update was downloading and installing I've been able to use car and the infotainment system as normal.
There's a different process for the Navigation system update. This requires the update to be downloaded to a USB stick and this plugged into the car's USB socket while the engine is running. The Nav system then goes out of use while the update is installed, but everything else on the car works as normal, and when the installation of the update is complete the Nav system restarts itself without the need to shut the car down.
However, the MY21 XEs and XFs have the newer Pivi Pro infotainment system so I guess the updates may work differently, though it would be odd if this was less smooth and convenient than the earlier system - but then you never know with JLR's software systems!
