Default 09 XF display dim when cold

09 XF, 25K miles. I have noticed this winter that the display is frequently dimmer after it sits for a couple of days in the cool (40's F) garage. (auto dim is off). It takes a while to brighten up, maybe 15 minutes or so. If I increase the brightness/contrast, it becomes too bright later on. Normal? something wearing out?

Thanks,
Dick

Default LCD's & temperature

The colder it gets the more the display will wash out, and also the more slowly it will move. It's perfectly normal behavior for any LCD - leave a calculator out over night and see how it behaves in the morning. Jaguar's display is no different. Once warmed up it should perform just fine again.

Thanks. I take my Garmin indoors at night when we're travelling in cold weather, but hadn't noticed it before in the Jaguar.

I have also noticed that my display is dimmer when the outside temperature is below 40 deg F or so and the car has spent several hours at that temperature. My car is a 2010 XF Premium. I notice it much more at night.

LCD displays response times increase at lower temperatures but this effect seems to be that the back light takes longer to reach full brightness when it is cold and is not directly attributable to the LCD itself. The cold cathode fluorescents, often used for backlighting, may be responsible here since I do not think these displays can be led backlit which would not exhibit this behavior. I have not noticed that the display response time changes, only backlight intensity.

Thanks, glad to know I'm not alone. If you have the "auto dim" on, it is more pronounced - but with the "auto dim" off, it is normally too bright at night. (assuming the auto dim on the 2010 works the same as 2009).

This "too dim" problem takes a while to correct itself which leads me to believe that the autodim may not be responsible. Although the autodim function has a delayed response to changes in ambient light (to prevent the display flickering whenever you pass through shadows or sudden bright sunlight) it has a shorter response time than the time it takes for the display to become normal relative intensity when cold. Now, it could be a malfunctioning autodim function as well (electronics can misbehave when they get cold but car electronics generally have military spec components and designs) but I am not sure here. Anyway the problem, though mild, seems to be part of the design!!

I, too, am glad I am not the only one seeing this. Thanks for the original post.

You will also find that when battery levels go down in cold weather the system tries to save power before advising that the system will shut down if using the electronics without the engine running. This effect will initially dim the display. During our cold spell before christmas the outside temp went to -7C and my display refused to come on until the inside had warmed slightly but I had to shut down and restart. Everything normalonce temp rose.

Had this happen for the first time since I purchased this car.
It's never done this in previous winters so I'm wondering if there could be another issue. I've also had the screen get stuck on the jaguar logo and even go black a couple times. AND, one of my vents wouldn't work, turn over, yesterday but today it worked.
Am I looking at a failing system?? And I'm pretty sure it's not covered under warranty.
