Interesting thread......I just bought a 09 Jag XF SC and just noticed a slight lateral vibration in the steering wheel at speeds above 50mph. Thought the front tires needed checking for balance. Checked the internet for local shops that had the proper equipment for Force Drive balancing. Found "Discount Tires/American Tires" had same and talked to them on the phone first. They decided to check all four tires and went the whole nine yards. They found that one front tire was faulty with a heavy spot that could not be "matched" to the rim. However they said they would do their best anyway......the vibration problem is now solved. This particular balancing procedure I had never done before on any car and was impressed how they removed all tires from the rims and literally started from scratch on each wheel. I will now run these tires till I see substantial wear and replace them all. I was concerned about the TPMS devices being properly returned to normal after the tires were re-fitted on the rims.....and did have an icon on the dash screen for a very short mile and then it went out. Seems everything is normal now.
P.S. I used the phrase "force drive" which was incorrect. The next message uses the phrase "Road Force" balancing and this is the correct one !

For the record, the first time I encountered this issue was in 1998 on a 98 Lexus GS 400. I had it in for vibration issues the magic four times without them being able to resolve the issue. Since it was now up for “lemon law” in Indiana, they brought in the regional rep. He said he had seen it before. I mentioned that I had test driven another GS 400 that was still on the lot and it did not have the issue. He had the dealer swap out the wheels/tire between that car and mine. While we were on the test drive with the new wheels/tires he mentioned to me that they had tracked this all down to the installation of the tires in the manufacturing plant. They were now using a new device called a road force balancer before putting any wheel on a vehicle. It was preventing the issue going forward and was forcing the manufacturer to check their quality as they were getting about 25% of their delivered tires back from Lexus at the time.
