Default 2009 or 2010 Supercharged

Hi all,

After what seems like a very long time I'm finally taking the plunge and getting into XF ownership after spending the last three years in an abusive relationship with a very unreliable BMW that just came out of warranty.

I'm looking at both 2009 and 2010 XF Supercharged models under the $30k mark. From what I've read there are big reliability improvements to be gained from a 2010 with the diff issue not being as common as it is on the 2009. I see a lot of threads about 09 S/Cs spending time at the dealers but couldn't find as many on the 2010.

Are there any other advantages to the 2010 (other than the obvious power and fun increases) over the 09? I'm not scared of high mileage cars and from what I've seen XFs seem to weather higher mileage reasonably well.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like you've done a lot of research already on the models so not sure how much more I can tell you, but really my only advice is to make sure you find an XF with some warranty. Even 2010 models have their issues as well (water pump, electrical issues, trim issues, etc), although not as much as 09s.

I would go for the 2010 model just because I think the selena wheels are a lot nicer than the wheels on the 09 models. However, I think you're gonna be hard pressed to find a 2010 S/C model under $30k unless it's either high mileage or lemon/accident vehicle. You should definitely be able to find a 2010 S/C though for less than $35k. I've even seen some decent 2011 S/C models asking for $35k. I'm sure you could negotiate down to $33.5k or $34k for a 2011 S/C.

I always recommend people to try and find a 2011 just because of the platinum warranty (free oil changes, brakes, rotors, filters, wipers) and the 5yr/50k mile warranty. I know it's probably an additional 3k or so more than a 2010, but its definitely worth it in my opinion.

Since you asked about 2010 vs 2009 though, definitely get the 2010. As far as the body is concerned, high mileage isn't a problem with these vehicles but more so electrical issues and I think there's a recommended service at 100k miles that I've heard is expensive (I can't remember what the exact recommended service was though). Good luck and hope you find something good.

I would agree that 2010 is a marked improvement in performance (5.0L vs. the 4.2L) and seems to have fewer reliability issues (so far...)

Your footer says you only want an XFR (if I read that right) - I'd encourage you to look at the XF SC model too. Was a lot cheaper when I was buying, is the same car (with slightly different tune I believe but marginal) and very highly equipped. It doesn't have the same obvious external visibility (scoops etc) but it's an outstanding drive.

Agree on warranty - some 2010s will still have factory warranty for a few more months (and you can extend by 2 years with the select Jag warranty if you buy from a dealer). 2011s have the 5-year warranty so plenty of coverage left.

Good luck!

Thanks! My footer is out of date, I was going to go for a newer XFR but my requirements changed and I discovered as you mention that there really isn't a substantial difference between the XF SC and the R to warrant the price differential. I'm looking at a car in TX and a couple in OR, none of which have warranties.

I spoke to a couple of Jag specialists here in the Bay Area and they both state that the reliability of the 09 vs the 10 is a big step up for those that received the 5.0 engine upgrade but they are essentially reliable cars and by the time they fall out of warranty a lot of the electrical gremlins have been ironed out.

Exciting news folks. I just put down a deposit on a 2010 XF SC in Vapour Grey on black leather with 61k on the clock. Assuming it passes the independent inspection on Monday then I will be flying to Houston on Friday and then driving it home with a friend that weekend. It is coming from a JLR dealer and I'm stealing it for $27k and then I'm getting a third party warranty through a friend in the trade at cost.

I'm very excited, not least for the 2000 mile road trip to get it home.

Sadly it doesn't have active cruise, just regular. But that will do for me, I-10 isn't exactly gridlocked at the weekend. I will also be calling on the services of my V1.

At that price I wouldn't be worried about it.

That's what I thought too. I'm just scared that the inspection will reveal a whole host of gremlins and I'll be back to square one. Perhaps I should have more confidence in the engineering of my home country.

I'll be put out of my misery one way or another tomorrow once the inspection is done.

Make sure they balance the wheels and check the alignment for you before you go driving back home that far. Huge pet peeve of mine that dealers overlook.

That sounds like an excellent deal for a 2010 SC - even with the mileage. You are out of warranty, so well worth giving the independent inspector a list of potential faults / issues that you will want to ensure are checked thoroughly. In general it's pretty reliable, but repairs are expensive...
My list would include checking for leaking water pump; check dash leather isn't bubbling or peeling up, particularly around center speaker on the dash; check sunroof opens/closes properly and doesn't rattle terribly when driving; the 20inch wheels are very prone to bending on potholes so worth checking them carefully; make sure all the electrics / infotainment etc works well, that it has a navigation DVD in the system in the trunk.
Would also have them check the carfax and double check anything that comes up on it.

Hopefully all checks out well - it looks like a great car at a great price. Good luck!

Thanks! This is an awesome forum, you guys have all been very helpful. I passed that onto the inspector, fortunately they are Jag specialists and very familiar with the XF.

I already ran the Carfax (totally clean) and also got a printout of the service record from the supplying dealer (also the selling dealer). This thing has not had a single warranty repair in its lifetime which I think is an excellent omen.

Nervously awaiting the results now. This isn't the first time I've bought a car sight unseen on the Internet but I always get a bit nervous at this stage.

Clean bill of health! No leaks, no odd noises, handles and drives well, tracks straight and true. There are some scuffs on the bumpers and wheels but the dealer is getting those dealt with anyway (they did disclose that when I was looking at the car). So all in all I think we have a winner and the deal is on!

I think you should check that there are 2 Nav Discs for the car. An Eastern and a Western. They came as an OEM pair.

Yes, I already confirmed that with the dealer that they are both present and the previous owner actually paid to update them to 2013 maps which is awesome.

I believe the 2010 XF Supercharged also came with the very excellent Bowers and Wilkins sound system, in which case you should also check for the often lost connecting cord which came from the factory for hooking up iPods and iPhone 4's in the center storage compartment.

Before you spend the extra money on the warranty...Not sure which numbered owner you are, but If you look at the carfax, see if it was sold as a select cpo vehicle to a prior owner. It will say so on the history report. It extends the warranty to 6 yrs 100k from date placed in service. And it follows the car, not the owner. I purchased my '09 XF-S/C about a month ago (55k miles for $23k...8th car purchased from the dealer in 6 months between my immediate and extended family, so I think it was pretty much sold at cost), but the cpo warranty is good until Jan 5, 2015. I would never have considered it had our sales guy Scott, an Infiniti dealer no less, not pointed that benefit out. I'm the 3rd owner. I just took her into the jaguar dealership this week, no issues with warranty coverage, so I can 100% attest it is transferable.

Is there a way to find this out? The supplying dealer is a JLR dealer and the salesperson did say he thought it had no warranty and now he is on vacation until Saturday when I pick up the car.

Edit - No warranty, the car was sold to the 2nd owner whilst still under the new car warranty and they did not extend it.

Bummer! At least they checked.
Mine stated on the Car Fax, first line under 2nd owner "Vehicle sold as Select Certified Pre Owned Vehicle" Next line had the "Vehicle registration..."
I suppose someone could call a Jaguar dealer and provide a VIN# to check it out as well.
