Default 2009 XF torque converter/differential clunk

Hello everyone, new member here from the midwest. I have been experiencing a strange clunking noise when letting off/getting back on the accelerator. The noise seems to come from the rear of the car. It almost sounds like a noisy torque converter, but I'm not sure what it is. Also, when coming to a stop in D or S mode, the 2-1 shift is jerky and can be felt more than before. When the transmission is cold there will be a shift flare from the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts until it warms up.

I'm not sure how all of these issues relate, but could definitely use some help here. The car only has 21k miles on it.

Welcome to the forum alexrts,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help section to the XF and XFR section. You'll get advice here from members with the same model.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

The mild "thump" of the ZF torque converter lock up clutch, when rolling slowly to a stop, is "normal" according to both ZF and Jaguar. This should not occur unless while rolling gently to a stop. It's a combination of the lock up clutch releasing and the transmission selecting second gear for you.

If what you are describing feels like driveline lash then be aware that there was a run of bad differentials on 2009 XF due to manufacturing contamination. Check with your dealer to ensure your VIN was not included in this run or that the rear axle has been changed under warranty if it was in that bad run.

I do hear the thunk when rolling to a stop, but it was not there before...unless I'm just going crazy. The transmission definitely seems to shift harder and also the clunking sound is there even when going 30+ MPH.

I will check with the dealership, but this is sort of an inconvenience as there is no Jaguar/LR dealership within 200 miles or so of me. I'll catch a video next time I remember to do so.
