2009 xf transmission
how would I check transmission fuel levels in my 2009 xf luxury
I noticed that during that there is a wetness under one end on bottom of the transmission pan and the same in the bottom of the cover...It is dark and may have been there for a while...NO liquid by wetness and dark..
Has anyone experience this situation. I am presuming it may be the gasket if anything....has anyone had this changed and I presume that there is a filter that would also be changed out...any advice.
I plan on having the wetness cleaned up and drive...It has been cold this winter in Canada and someone says that this could happen and stops when it warms up.

It's a sealed zf box. I don't think that you can check the fluid levels.
If you want to change the fluid you can get a kit containing 6 one litre bottles of zf fluid and a pan/gasket/filter. I think it's around $300. There's a place in California that sells them but as far as I know they only ship to the continental us. Rock auto has the kit as well (minus the fluid that you can probably source locally).

You can check fluid level by going through the fill procedure. Basically you get it up to the specified temp via the procedure and if nothing comes out of the fill hole then it's either at the correct level or low. Add fluid and then keep track of what you add so you know how low.
Keep in mind it might make more sense to change the fluid/filter if you haven't done it before vs. topping it off.

Take a look at your transmission coolant lines. They've been known to start seeping fluid. From what I understand, it's an issue with most of the 2009 model years. I've been really surprised that it hasn't been discussed much on this forum. It's an expensive fix ($1000) because I was told they have to remove one of the motor mounts to replace them. Had mine replaced last year and it wasn't a warranty item.

Transmission cooler lines tend to weep on all cars with age. They leak at the transition from rubber to metal lines.
You can do a very low cost and quick fix by carefully removing the metal crimp fitting. I use a Dremel tool. Then either reuse or replace the short rubber hose section. Use two worm drive clamps placed opposite of each other to clamp the rubber hose back to the steel line. The steel line has a profile so the rubber hose does not just pull off.
Now before you do all that please get off your computer and get under your car to inspect it closer. Remove the belly pans so you can see. The ZF has a well-known leak from the sleeve. This is where the wire bundle enters the transmission. It is so common to be almost 100% with age. The good thing is the sleeve is only about $20-$15. The bad thing is you need to drop the pan and fluid to get it changed.
But that is the perfect time to do a transmission service to change pan/filter (You do know they are integrated and a single unit?), sleeve and fluid all at once. You have a 2009 and you are overdue for a transmission service anyway. It is NOT sealed for life! So forget that bit of fantasy.
As was posted above the dealer will replace the lines not repair them and it's a big job as well as expensive.

Compatible zf transmission flluid
If anyone researched I find that one litre of zf transmission fluid for my 2009 jaguar xf 4.2l $80 per litre. Do you know of a compatible product for my Jag or a place that sells zf transmission fluid besides Jaguar dealer
It would be much appreciated

ZF recommend you use the OEM "Lifeguard 6" trans fluid, which appears to come in 1 litre bottles only unless you can get hold of a 20 litre workshop drum (unlikely).
While looking for alternatives, just in case I wanted to do a trans fluid flush and renew on my old XFS, I came across some Redline trans fluid which meets the Lifeguard 6 specs, see here: Redline OIL D6 Synthetic ATF 1 US Gallon 3 78L | eBay
If I had gone ahead with a flush and change I would have bought this.
It also comes in a convenient 1 US gallon (or 3.785 litre) bottle, you would need two bottles to complete a flush and refill.

Yes, you have a ZF transmission and this is what you may need:

I had my Jaguar 2009 xf luxury up on the hoist and cover removed to check on wet transmission pan in the rear back side. It looks like the gasket. I presume rather than just replacing the gasket it seems people recommend getting the kit...with fluid pan cover gasket and sleeve plus some extra torque screws
the question i have is the how to get the fill plug off as there seems to be a heat shield so the person inspecting tells me. Is the heat shield removed or unscrewed on one end to get at the plug. Second how does one get the litres of fluid in...is there a hand pump that has to be bought with hose?
