Default 2010 XFR Tire choices/recs

2010 XFR has Continentals all round. Living in central Texas means a high performance/summer tire can be the year round choice. On other cars I have enjoyed the Michelin Pilot Super Sports but these look like they are being phased out in favor of the Pilot AS3 and some sites warn the MPSS aren't speed rated for the Jag.

I wasn't generally very impressed with Continental as a whole although I know they tend to be the OEM tire for Audi/BMW etc. Any opinions on some of the tire rack top sellers for this beast - Bridgestone/Pirelli or even the Hankooks ?

Not worried about huge mileage life nor eco-MPG gains (why would I have chosen a 5L V8 supercharged engine...) so I would welcome your suggestions (and any mistakes you made!). Oh these are stock wheels BTW.

Thanks!

-Stuart

The Continentals we have as standard on our cars are All-Season tires, as with any brand, AS tires are always a compromise.

Here is a comparison of the best summer performance tires available at a reasonable cost:
Tire Test Results : Clash of the Titans: Testing Two New Max Performance Summer Heavy Hitters

Michelin AS3 do not compare to the PSS in ultimate performance, as they are still all-seasons.

To sum up, I would pick one of these 3 based on ones priorities:

Michelin PSS: Most expensive, best performance dry and wet, 30k mile warranty, and treadwear rating - 300.

Bridgestone S-04: ~200$ cheaper for all 4 tires compared to PSS, 95% of the performance of the PSS, no warranty, treadwear rating is least - 280

Continental ExtremeContact DW: ~250$ cheaper for all 4 tires compared to PSS, 90% of the performance of the PSS, no warranty, but highest treadwear rating - 340

I saw the above price difference based on this tire size: 255/40 - 19 inch rim

doesnt look like you could get those in a 20" staggered set up , only one size of 20" that i could find and they are to narrow for the rims on the S/C cars

i put the continental extreme contacts on my 06 STR and have no complaints, but again just like my XF s im a pretty low mileage user. im putting wheels on the XFs tomorrow , but ill be transferring my current tires which are the factory Dunlops i believe... when i do replace the tires ill go with a set that are a little taller, to fill the wheel well better and a little smoother ride...

Yep I loved the MPSS on my Audi. I was very lucky to get an astounding clearance price from Costco on them. Which is why I was wondering if they are being phased out - currently OoS on TireRack and many other shops. My other concern was the flagging that they didn't meet the speed rating - although I have yet to find somewhere like Clarkson where I can unwind it to 155mph ;-)

Looks like it might be the Bridgestones then - I'd heard conflicting reports of those...

Bridgestones are awesome performing tires. Went from the Hankooks to the S-04's and it was like getting into a different car. Much sharper turn in, great grip, very good feel of what the road surface is.

The only downside I've experienced so far is that the ride isn't as good with the S-04's as the Hankooks. But the significant other didn't complain so I'm guessing a lot of it is just road feel through the wheel.

Haven't tried the Michelins yet, but can't imagine they could be much better than the Bridgestone's.

AFAIK the XFR only ever came from the factory with performance (summer) tires. Other XF's may indeed have come with A/S.

PSS: awesome tire, and still available. Higher performance tire than the PS3 and I have never heard that it is being replaced by the PS3. As for speed rating, it's a Z rated tire, perfectly fine on an XFR.

I am almost done with the PZeros that came as OEM on my XFR-S. They have been a great tire, much better than the OEM Dunlops that came on my old XFR. In fact, I might even get them again if they are cheaper than PSS.

Why not go for the S-04s? Test results show they are a better performing tire with a higher treadwear rating and as a bonus, they seem to be cheaper than even the PZeros at most Tire sites and shops.

Huge fan of the Nitto NT555 Extremes. Very sticky, good in rainy weather, reasonable tread life, not very noisy. There's a lot to like!

I admit I am biased against Bridgestone, and it is not a rational thing. I had a set of RE050 tires as OEM on my old V8 Vantage and they were so bad it hurt. Since then I have always looked elsewhere.

You must have had bad luck with yours. I've run them on multiple performance vehicles with great results

Good possibility, I could feel the *** end squirm on dry pavement with the pss the *** end always hooks and never squirms. The sidewall getting a nice 3" Crack that was a quarter inch deep didn't help much either....

So I went through this a few months ago when one of my rear Nittos cracked. For some reason Jaguar has a weird designation on their OEM tires which is a PITA to find. The best way to find the PSS is to search for the size and do NOT tell them the kind of car. PSS are absolutely rated for 155+ MPH. Speed rating "Y" 186+ MPH

They also have this tire which is in stock and appears to be the run flat version of the PSS.

Some of us didn't buy this car to race or sup it up. It is a beautiful, comfortable and reliable car as it is. A few personal cosmetic upgrades to make it your own is good enough for me. When the Conti's are worn out I want a safe, quiet comfortable ride. I put the MXV4's on an old van I have and it rides better than it ever did. The MXV4's are my choice for the Jag replacements. Never had a problem with Michelins!

I hear you, I had a terrible experience with BF Goodrich tires, so I swore them off for life.

Great collection of cars you have there BTW!
