According to the 2012 Electrical Manual it is Relay 17 in the Engine Junction Box. (The big box in the engine compartment --passenger side of engine bay)

Default Fuse Locations

Attached you will find fuse locations for 2012 XF Portfolio. There are no diagrams for relays in the Owner's Manual. Positons of relays are shown in individual electrical diagrams given in the 2012 XF Electrical Wiring Diagrams.

Good luck with the issue, I had the same experience with my 2010 XF Portfolio and it ended up being a fried starter, had to get a new Bosche starter, have it configured and installed.

The starter required configuration to your car?
I had not heard of that before? I thought the starter was just a remove and replace item?

In all honesty, I always thought the same, buy a new starter and install. I took my car to a local import shop and had a great discussion with the owner who use to work on British cars back when they were British, Still works on the Jaguars, Bentleys and such . He explained if the starter board is not aligned with the car, it can put stress on the electrical and computer system. I was sinical at first but he had a lot of technical points that seem quite logical. He brought in the starter at wholesale price and didn't charge for verifying/configuring so it was not some sort of added expense. Maybe someone who professionally works on these cars can explain it further,

I do find that the car is extremely easier to turn over and has a very quick start but I did buy it used so I am not familiar how it was originally. It is easier to start as a 5.0l versus my 3.0l.

Yes I would like to hear what he did as I would have just bolted it on without a second thought?
Glad you got it fixed too.

I wish I had more answers, as you can imagine the discussion created more questions than I expected. I could only think to myself "There is a board for the starter?" The way he explained it, when installing an aftermarket starter, the draw and resistance needs to match OEM specs or it can damage the computer, He also explained that he would receive three starters of the same model and get three different results.

As you can imagine, at this point I was thinking how much more is this going to cost but after he told me about all the time in the evening, he spent on it and getting it fast tracked to his shop from Eastern Canada, it ended up being a bit more than half the price of what I could get it for. I was so relieved, and my brain was so scrambled that I was just happy to pay and get going.

Maybe I misinterpreted what he was stating and there is no board in the starter. (I'm still trying to understand where it could be if there is one, as I can see, it looks no different than any other starter i have installed over the years. Love to take one apart now out of curiosity.) He might be stressing that the concern is on the complete electronic system.

Had the same symptoms and had to replace the starter on my 2012 5.0 Portfolio. Just unbolted the old one, bolted in the new one, and started right up. Never had any more issues and that was two years ago.
