Default 2012 XF Gas Gauge

Hi Folks,

I was wondering if the following info is considered "normal" for a 2012 XF with 8 cylinder NA engine. Perhaps some of you can chime in with your opinions.

About 4 months ago I bought a CPO 2012 XF which had 10,000 miles. It was purchased from a Jaguar dealer and the car has really been a delight and trouble free.

Just recently, I noticed that after the past few gas fill ups my gas gauge will go to slightly past half tank when gas pump shuts off and then it will crawl up to full after driving for several miles. It then functions properly. It had not done this before until the past 4 fill ups and I have not had this happen with any previous cars I have owned.

It is not that big of a deal to me but I contacted the Service Manager from where I bought the car and explained the situation. He said that the gauges on these cars are known to be slow to register after a fill up but as long as it registers to full after a few minutes, it is normal, and that there is nothing to do or to worry about.

I would hate to bring it in and let them start to mess with car if this is simply a characteristic of the car.

What do you folks think? Has anyone else experienced this?

I greatly appreciate any input you can provide. Thanks.

Ed

Ed,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XF/XFR forum. (Also left a forwarding link in General Tech Help to get two chances of replies)

The fuel gauge is the one instrument we rarely see mentioned in posts across the various model tech forums so if this behaviour is "normal" as the Service Manager claims, it must be an X250 issue.

Members here with the same model are best placed to comment on this.

If I fill up from close to empty, it registers immediately. I have noticed on two occasions that it will take a longer time to gradually creep up if I have only put a couple gallons in to tide me over until I could get gas elsewhere due to eggregiously high prices...

Early shut off is a known issue on some cars. A slow fuel gauge is not a known problem. You should have the tank sender replaced under warranty.

I have definitely experienced the gradual crawl up to full on other cars, but only in the specific circumstance I mentioned on the XF. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think the OP mentioned anything about early shut off.

You'll have experienced the two different types of fuel level sender. The Jaguar uses an instantaneous fuel level sender so the gauge should read full immediately.

The original poster did refer to delivery pump shut off which may be confused with fuel level issues.

I think I was very considerate in my wording that the OP did not mention anything about early shut off. I will now simply say that you are without question reading the post incorrectly.

Here in the USA we tend to read exactly what is written and not install words or implications that is simply not there...So the Poster (Ed) asked a simple question of why his fuel gauge is reacting slowly to indicate a full tank after he filled it and not when the pump shut off early.. Geezzz!..Seems pretty straight forward wording to me...

Anyway, to set your mind at ease Ed..There is not a problem..this happens once in a while and can be slow to register a tank full level..Mine has done it also a few times in the past..I see nothing to be the matter..the car is hyper-computer controlled and sometimes like all computers, they need a time to reboot or clear some stuff from registry to act right...

However, give it a few more times and if it still acts up, I'd take in for a check....I'm just glad now, that I don't have a confusing Engine temp gauge to distract me..

Oh and Fill when you are at least at a half tank.

This makes a lot of sense - Just like it takes ten seconds sometimes for the rear camera to come up and other times it is instantaneous. Probably has something to do with tea time...

One other thought, since I'm one of those "Flintstones" from the US - Have you tried tapping on the gauge? : )
