2013 XF Brake Upgrade recommendations
Hi Ya'll,
So my 2013 xf 3.0 is almost at 50k miles and I need to replace the pads. Since it is time, I am thinking about doing some mods and would love the input from this community! I really like the style and look of slotted and/or drilled rotors but have heard differing things concerning their performance. Anyone have any experience switching from OEM to slotted and/or drilled. And what should I look for/stay away from?
Steve

It is mostly personal preference however I would stay away from drilled rotors on a daily driven vehicle as they have a tendency to crack and cause premature failure of the pads and rotors. Slotted is better for everyday cars because they dont experience the same issues. Really though the stock rotors are more then up to the task of normal driving. But if you dont like the way stock rotors look, i say go slotted, but not drilled.

I suspect the R1 rotors are rebranded Chinese made ones, exactly the same as several other brands, they sure look identical to the slotted and drilled ones I bought a few years ago (which are now on the F-Type).
The bundle I bought was advertised as ceramic pads but they were in fact Centric PosiQuiet semi-metallic pads, and the boxes they came in had false "ceramic" labels stuck over the top of the original "semi-metallic" labels.
That said I have had no problems at all with the rotors and they are barely worn at all after some 20,000 km, and the PosiQuiet semi-metallic pads are perfectly OK, just not as low dust as true ceramic pads.
The only true ceramic pads I know of for the XFR brakes (380 mm front and 376 mm rear) are EBC, although Porterfield make carbon/kevlar pads for the 380 mm front brakes and they are very low dust (I have Porterfield R4S on the F-Type, the front pads are identical to the XFR pads but the rears are different).
If you have the 355 mm front and 326 mm rear brakes then PowerStop Evolution pads are very good, true ceramic and extremely low dust.

It depends how you're going to use the car. I'm using EBC Redstuff ceramic pads with plain discs for "spirited" road use and I love them. They work well and don't leave the wheels covered in black dust like semi-metallics.
If you're planning to do a track day you'll need to step up to the Yellowstuff pads. I know from personal experience the Redstuff won't survive a weekend at the track without fading- they're a performance street grade and work very well for that and last longer than yellow. I asked EBC for advice on rotors, expecting them to sell me the drilled, slotted ones but they were adamant I should stick to plain ones. Drilled and slotted rotors will generate wind noise and the advice of EBC was that they would not provide any braking performance benefit for fast street use. Again, it depends how you're going to use the car.
Redstuff makes less dust than Yellowstuff which in turn makes less mess than the OE semi-metallics.
