I have only come across one with the 6.35mm setup, my 2010 XFR so I don't think they made many. I don't think they made any Range Rovers with the 6.35mm, my 2010 had 8mm.

I think it is available but VERY expensive. I only changed the two fixed guides on mine but I located them OK.

I have never heard this, mine looked fine so I reused them.

Before and after shots 2010 engine with 8mm chains. Two different designs of tensioner, one has strange angle of contact because of different mounting hole position. I think both types are available so beware if choosing.

Pre 'Bad' contact angle

Post 'Correct' contact angle (IMO)

Early 2010 6.35mm setup. Not the plastic inserts for the tensioner to push on.

I have a question around the timing chain in the XF-RS motor that was produced in the 2013 year, yes there is lots of talk and banter on the known issues but what I can not establish is if the XF-RS's have the older error prone timing chain guides, or did it already have the newer style?

Secondly I have heard somewhere that there is/was an upgrade of the chains from 5mm to 6.3mm, which would this vehicle have?

I would like to establish if I need to invest in new guides and chains(kit) or should mine be save for now...

Current mileage on the vehicle is 56 000km's or 35 000 miles and she has an up to date full service history with Jaguar with annual oil changes.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

Paul
@bullet24 Also from Durban in SA. I am keen on a XFRS and there is one for sale. Hardly see this car around and lack of local forums. Was hoping to chat about how your ownership has been locally. New to Jag..would appreciate a chat if possible. Seems I am unable to DM you..but my email is derivcos@gmail.com.

The chains pitch was changed from 6.35mm to 8.0mm not 5.0mm. The 6.35mm stuff was original and is now NLA. They went to the 8.00mm stuff early on probably for cost savings but we really don't know why?

Here is a nice photo to show the differences. You may have seen this as it's been posted before.

The real problem was the spring loaded cylinder in the tensioner was too hard and would wear the back of the guide and then the tensioner was over extended and couldn't keep the chain as tight as it needs to be. Then you get all the noises common to tensioner problems.

Here is a diagram showing one of the things they upgraded.

Mainly they added a hardened wear button (Blue circle in diagram) on the back of the guide shoe so the end of the tensioner pushed on this hardened metal tab instead of the softer guide shoe body.

Take a look at this Dave Tibbs thread for very detailed info on what and why this happens.
