Default AC "Auto" failure

Driving along, about halfway through a 2-hour trip, sunny day, 80+ outside, about 70 inside. All of a sudden the AC fan speed cranks up and starts to freeze us out.
Turned the fan down (which turns the AUTO off), AC returned to comfortable. After 10 minutes or so, turned the AUTO back on and (after a couple of minutes) the fan speed took off again. Came the rest of the way home with AUTO off. Did check that the air got hot when we turned the temps up.
Got home prepared to take it into the shop tomorrow, but naturally it worked ok for the few minutes I tried it.
Is there any way the dealer can diagnose this without the symptom occurring, or should I just wait until it becomes a permanent condition?
Thanks
