Default Automatic Trunk Release

After months of purchasing the 2009 XFS, the automatic trunk release does not work. When I press on the remote, all I hear is this loud churning/clicking like it's trying to release but doesn't. The only way we have been able to open the trunk is manually with the key.

Has someone else had this problem and been able to solve the issue?

It sounds like all the electrical is working, so must be mechanical. Does it "soft close" properly?

09 doesn't have the soft close feature. Sounds like the electrics have become disconnected from the latch.

Could it be that the car is in "valet mode?"

I have read up on the valet mode issue and no it's not turned on. I tried to remove the covering on the trunk but couldn't get the covering off where it was near the latch...and I assume I need to do this to see the electrical wiring. Does anyone have diagrams I can follow? Seems simple but I can't seem to get it off.

Thanks for the insight so far.

Have you tried pushing down hard on the trunk lid or pulling it up hard while the latch is churning to see if anything changes or the lid opens. If so, the latch has slipped or been knocked out of position somehow. Otherwise, the latch solenoid has probably become disconnected from the latch mechanism as Jagular mentioned. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to access the latch solenoid and mechanism even though I watched from a distance while a body technician did it to my 09 about three years ago.
