No stop start and only a single battery on a 2008 XF.
And yes, a failing battery will cause your problems and if the battery in the car is the original it is well past due for replacement.
A normal flooded cell lead acid battery is OK (as long as it's at least 90 amp hours and 750 CCA) but a more modern AGM battery (commonly used in cars with a stop/start system but perfectly OK for those that don't) is better although more expensive.

Yep, it will probably be OK, just make sure it is sufficiently rated, the right size and shape to bolt straight in, and put it on a battery charger first to bring it right up to 100%.
