Yeah, most likely the bluetooth module is broken. These seem to be a really common failure point - people blame water ingress but mine failed without any obvious signs of water.
The symptoms are usually being unable to connect to bluetooth, but also random/persistent reboots of the in-car entertainment system as the failed module disrupts communications on the MOST network.
There are two options: either replace the bluetooth unit (new is crazy expensive, used ones can be found on eBay - my advice is to find one for a Land Rover with a similar part number printed on the unit as it will work and they're generally cheaper than the jaguar equivalent), or simply buy a and forget about bluetooth.

So finally an update from Switzerland:
First I removed the bluetooth module in order to check the article number and to check whether there is an obivous visual damage or not.
After removing it (disconnected the vehicle battery first in order to prevent any other damage - who knows nowadays) the in-car entertainment system
then started to reboot persistently.
I couldn't find any visual damage even when I took a closer look at the PCB (no water damage, nothing burnt or similar).
I then mounted the bluetooth module again and the in-car entertainment system rebooted as usual again. But for some inexplicable reason
the bluetooth search function was working again and I could connect my phone as expected.
Too good to be true... after 10km of driving the in-car entertainment system suddenly started to reboot persistently (exactly like it would be when no bluetooth module is connected).
While looking for another used bluetooth module I found out that also Volvo has used the same module between '09 and '13 (among Land Rover). Here are the article numbers of the different brands:
Jaguar 7G9N-10D893-AG or 7G9N-10D893-AF
Land Rover 7G9N-10D893-AA or 7G9N-10D893-AB
Volvo 7G9N-10D893-BB or 7G9N-10D893-AB
They are all from FOMOCO - Ford Motor Company, but the prices differ quite a lot. All of them can be used for the XF X250 (has been verified in the german Jaguar forum).
As in the previous comment mentioned, I finally replaced the bluetooth module. By accident I found an used one from a Volvo XC60 (7G9N-10D893-BB) for around 80$ in Switzerland. So now everything works as expected.

Nice!
I found a Volvo unit on ebay for $30 so decided it was worth the gamble, and it "half" worked - I could see the previous phones listed in the unit, but I couldn't remove them and any actions with bluetooth (e.g. pairing new phone) wouldn't work, and button presses were timing out etc. I assumed that while the units looked the same maybe the software version was incompatible - I guess it's possible the unit was just faulty.
Thank you for the WERS numbers, that's super useful!

Unit arrived and i set to work. I am not a great mechanic (I just no the basics) but 1 hour later unit was fitted and all working as it should.
The unit is standard between jaguar and Land Rover, you should pay no more than £45 for a second hand unit which is a bargain as i was quoted £500 for the job from a jaguar specialist
