Default Brake pads

Break pad low warning light came on a week ago on my 2011 jaguar xf. I called the dealership to see if I could buy Wagner break pads and if they could install them. They said no they'll only install factory oem parts and that if I change my break pads I have to change my rotors too.
My question is can I put other break pads besides the factory OEM pads? And do I really have to change my rotors if I change the break pads? I have around 32,000 miles on my car also. If somebody could please give any advice it would be very helpful and greatly appreciated, thank!

It depends on the condition the rotors are in.

The problem is that, if your rotors are grooved or are in imperfect state, they will damage the new pads, which may result in vibration, squeals, squeaks etc.

I have used different brands of rotors and pads in the past and i like the OEM the best.

A fellow member edobernig, did an outstanding write-up on changing the pads on the XF (Thanks again Ed). He used EBC pads and here is the link ...... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...job-how-85582/

BTW, did they give you a price quote on a brake job?

I'd be very surprised to learn that your rotors are unserviceable at only 32K miles. An independent garage can fit whatever brand of pad you choose, or DIY like most of us.

Take it to a good independent mechanic and have them look at the rotors. If they are ok just get them to install the pads. If not, pick up a set of 4 centric premium rotors from rock auto for around $300 and throw those on with the new pads.

The quote was 1200 for pads and rotors installed. The rotors also look in perfect shape to me but I will check into it with an independent mechanic, and thank for the responses so quickly but I have another question.
How often should I normally change the break pads and are ceramic break pads good better or worse than normal metallic pads?

'As required' and not a moment earlier or later. No two drivers are the same so there's no set interval.

I replaced the brake pads on all of my past Jaguars with ceramic pads with great results. OEM pads are notorious for producing a lot of brake dust. Ceramic pads virtually eliminate this.

Go to the "How section" and follow the link. I covered almost every issue including sourcing parts. Brake Labs and Auto Parts Warehouse have pads. Not as difficult to find pads for the non-supercharged XF's. Rotors can be resurfaced unless they are too worn or glazed. The SC and R pads are harder to find but still very available from numerous manufactures.

you have a 2011 XF right? I believe the first 2 brake jobs under 50k miles should be free under the Jaguar Platinum Coverage

Yes its a 2011. will check into that, but I bought the car out of another state. Would I have to bring it back to the dealer where the car was purchases or could I bring it to any dealership to receive the free break pad change

Ed,

Since, we are on the topic. Do you know if the NA 5 liter XF has two piston calipers or just one?

Sir2 is correct, 2 sets of pads under warranty for '11s. Any Jag dealer can service your car for warranty work or otherwise. If I wasn't getting free pads I would go ceramic to cut the dust.

Default Good question. Don't know

I don not know. I assume that they're engineered to have just enough pistons to stop the car. Usually the rears have only one....sometimes you can tell by looking at the outside of the caliper. Turn the wheel hard to one-side and see if you can see the back and look at the number of round shapes in the casting.

On 2011's use the Platinum Warranty first, which should cover about everything but tires! I changed to ceramics which is why I had to incur the cost.

Thank you for this thread. I have a 2011 XF S/C and brake pad warning light just came on. Just went to dealer and they just quoted me $1037 for pads/rotors for REAR ONLY!!! Didn't know the platinum coverage included brakes so going right back up there. Sweet, this just saved me a fortune.

How many miles are on your car? Just want to know if the brakes wear any faster...

And, yes it's quite expensive for a brake job. It's another $1100 for the fronts.

Ed,

I have thought about it, since i have the proper garage with all the tools. But, i have worked so much on personal vehicles in the last 10 years, that i have grown very tired of it....never thought that was possible.

Nowadays, i just like to drop it off and pick up all finished.
