Default Broken Rear Molding (Help Greatly Appreciated!) - 2011 XF

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping there are XF owners on here who have encountered the same issue I’m currently dealing with. Recently, my chrome rear molding on my XF has come loose from the trunk department. When I examined the area, it looks like the plastic brackets that held the molding to the trunk have broken. My first question is, is there a “quick fix” way to fix the molding back to the trunk without having to purchase an entire brand new molding? I’ve contacted my local Jaguar dealer and was advised the part itself would cost $355, so if I’m trying to avoid that cost if possible.

Additionally, since the rear molding has partially detached from my trunk, now my Jaguar constantly notifies me that my trunk is open, even though it is fully closed. Because the system believes the trunk is open, I am now unable to lock my car. Is there a way to “reset” my car’s system in a way so that I can lock it?

I’ve added photos of the broken trunk molding for reference. If there are any additional details I can provide, please let me know!

Thank you,
Tony

You’ll notice in this photo the chrome molding is tilted down away from the rear drivers side light, which is caused by the brackets that held it to the bumper being broken.

Step #1: Duct tape the chrome strip back on and see if that fixes your "TRUNK OPEN" error message.

Step #2: If step #1 works, then get some Gorilla Glue for the plastic brackets.

Hi Stu,

Thank you for your response. The duct tape helped to keep the molding in place, however the “Trunk Open” notification is still on. I got curious and checked the wiring coming from the car to the trunk in that tube on the right side of the trunk and there is one wire that is cut and separated from it’s other half. From searching the forums, there should be a way to attach both halves of the wire back together. That’s just something I’ve never done before, so any tips are always appreciated!

Yes, I thought your loose chrome and "TRUNK OPEN" message were caused by two separate issues. Any descent auto parts store in Phoenix will be able to provide you with the necessary items for attaching the ends of the wires. They will most likely be able to also supply Gorilla Glue. Be very careful with the glue and do not get it on the paint. Put the glue on the plastic brackets and then hold the chrome in place with duct tape for 24 hours.

Cheers,

Stu

same thing has happened to me. I have the plastic bracket that broke off. should I be able to just glue it back, and then clip the moulding back?

Forget gluing anything back on. It's a "Hail Mary" pass and It won't last I know. If you don't want to pay the new price used is fine BUT be sure you know what ALL the clips look like because the junk yard guys are rough and tend to break things when wrecking cars out.

If you can find a picture of the back side of a new part it should show all the clips/fasteners.
Have you removed it to see what the problem is? Normally these don't come off?

I figure I can glue it back for the time being until I buy a new one. I would rather buy a new one than a used part.
