Default Car not in park?

So every time I've gotten into the car since buying it a few months ago, the car has done a fast beep at me and displayed a message I couldn't quite read fast enough before it was gone. Today I finally read it: "Car not in park".
To my knowledge, I've never had it OUT of park when I've parked it, but I can't recall a single time I hadn't heard that beep. I thought it was just saying my key wasn't in the car yet, since I was just getting in. Has anybody run into this and know what's going on?

Not sure but on the S Type we have been told it's an artifact of the system network.

When you start the car everything has to check in or an error code will show up. There are a number of things/modules/sensors that are checked. The speed at which this is done matters. So the system thinks you are not in park but only for a second or two until the sensor that reads the shifter position signs in as yes we are in park.

Now whether this means anything about future failures or problems I don't know.

Is your car an early model - 2009? Quite a few people had that a while back - I'll find the thread
It seemed to be incurable but didn't appear to cause any other issues
