Default Codes p0430 &p0420; O2 Sensors or Catalytic Converter

I have had the following code p0430 for 6 months, since the 2nd day of ownership of my 2009 XF Premium Luxury. I assumed it was the the O2 sensor, however I experienced 3 occasions with in the last 2 weeks upon starting the car there is hesitation and the car stumbles. 1 of the times the car cut off after attemping to start the car.

I plan on replacing the catalytic converters with a pair of Davicos from rockauto.

Im wondering if these codes are due to my cats or 02Sensors. I think the best thing to do is replace both, so im going to order everything, as my XF has almost 130,000 miles.

Okay i have stupid question, Can someone who has replaced their cats and/or O2Sensors before tell if there is only 4 02Sensors on the car, 2 upstream in the from and 2 downstreams on the cats? I was under the car last week and seen to senors looking things on the cats. I assume 1 is a O2Sensor, what is the other one?

Im also going to change the air filter, fuel filter, oil/filter, antifreeze, and sparkplugs. I dont know when any of these have been changed, so i feel its necessary as i like to know when these things were done.

Anyother tips, links, or other help is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hey,

I have an 09 XF Supercharged that had the P0430 fault code.

The car had hesitation while trying to reach highway speeds, spuddering acceleration etc.

Brought it in to the dealer about 1 year ago, they put new driver-side cat in.

About one year later the other side had gotten blocked (same driving issues occured) which then threw the P0430 code.

The car had about 66k miles on it when it occured. Dealership did vacuum test, checked MAFs/filters also. Wish I knew why this happened to the vehicle.

The cats were under the emissions warranty on my vehicle.

When codes are flagged you're expected to fix the cause(s). Tends to get worse / more expensive the longer you ignore them.

Misfires(what you have) will shorten life and kill cats. I would replace spark plugs at least done every 100k, doubt yours have been done if you dont know. Flush(clean) injectors with either onboard cleaner running injectors on bg cleaning aparatus at shop or have them removed and sent to www.injectorrx.com for full cleaning and rebuild. Cheap cats are just that, cheap dont use unless it to sell the car. Scrap buyers wont pay but $5 for those and $40-60 for oem because they have alot more precious metal. Hense they last much much longer. After you fix the misifres if it still pops 430-420 you can then try these downstream spacers which work well from O2 Simulator, mini catalytic Converter cel fix. If theyre plugged or still pop the codes then you definitly need new cats

Default Thanks

I'm going to replace them with the cheap cats, new o2 sensors and spark plugs.
from what the book shows it's nothing but 2 clamps and 4 bolts, plus disconnecting the o2 sensors.
I shouldn't have to weld anything correct?

Default Update!

I replaced the air filter on Thursday. On Sunday I removed the air deflector an discovered some dumb a$$ installed the tire pressure initiator backwards, thus the reason for my tps warning on the dashboard.
I then detached the o2 sensors from drivers side (bank2) loosened 1 bolt on the upper catalytic converter 2 turns. Tried the other bolt which was in a very tight spot using a long deep socket 15mm (no luck). I eventually went back at it with a shorter deep socket which worked, but was cold and getting late. I connected and tightened everything up then put the air deflectors back on. Got a code 0171, tried clearing it, but it came back on. Cleared it again then went in for the night. Next day (today) no check engine light or any other lights, car has way better acceleration and I have new parts sitting around.
I began to think there was a vacuum leak from the cat or o2 sensor, but I'm going to wait till in warms up or Saturday when I'm off and replace spark plugs, change oil, maybe even change the fuel filter.

Hope the p0430 or p0171 don't come back and I don't have to change the cats or o2 sensors! However I'll wait and see this weekend. I might return the parts or just hold on to them untill another day when I'm bored.

I do have one other issue upon a cold start I have a vibrating rattle which comes and goes once the car warms up, im hoping its something to do with the oil. Not sure of the last time it was changed and i have a lite tickening noise indicating to me the oil is low or needs changed (just my 2 cents). I have read a few threads hope it's not the timing chain tensioner referenced in the link here. http://www.jaguarforum.com/showthread.php?t=44536

P0171 is a 2-trip code so if the fault is there expect it to take 2 warm ups to flag.

A better approach is to look at fuel trims using live data (elm327 etc).

Default Thanks jagv8

Didn't know about elm327's just ordered one. My code readers are old and don't read live data or do and won't read my car codes. But anyhow I haven't had a light come on at all but I do notice the car idles weird upon cold start in the morning. Jumps up and down after pressing on the gas pedal anywhere from .5-1 rpms and says low coolant for a under a minute.

Default Had P0430 as well

I had that code on my 2009 XF SC and it was the drivers side cat. I also got mine from RockAuto as I was not paying almost $2k to get it replaced by Jaguar. They are definitely louder than OEM! I kept my 02 sensors and they were still fine. It's been a couple months and the code hasn't returned.

Default Fixed it this past weekend

It was the drivers side cat. I switched my upstream o2 sensors and got the same code. Next day put on the drivers side cat, code was gone. Replaced the passenger side the following day along with a oil change and spark plugs. Manifold studs came of with passenger side cat had to replace both studs and nuts from the dealer 15 bucks a stud and 10 per a nut. Easy fix. Broke a air valve changing spark plugs another $30. Dam tpms light came back on, no biggy. The cats are louder but not much, should last 5 yrs as stated by the manufacturer davico.
