Considering buying pre-owned XF
In the market for a used 2010/11 hopefully certified basic XF with around 35K miles. Comparison shopping with MB E350 and BMW 5 series (528i) on the low-end of price scale. Right now as it stands I would rank me leaning towards 1)MB 2) Jag 3)BMW though 1)BMW 2)Jag 3)MB is in terms of affordability at this time of the year. Not in a rush will probably wait another 3-4 months. Have had an S-type for last 10 years. Not excited by MB or BMW looks they are dime a dozen around here, XF is different - the pizza delivery kid drives BMW 3 series.
Any suggestions on what to look for in used XF 2010/11 years?

Those are some very good choices. Have you driven any of them?
You will love the XF, if you like performance.
In order to have the NA 5 liter engine in the 2010 MY, you will have to opt for a Premium package. Otherwise all 2011s came with the 5 liter engine standard.
The only thing i can think of is creaky doors.

Thanks for all the advice - will mull it over. Given the cheapskate I am I think I'll stick with the '11 MY and hopefully take advantage of the new car depreciation - I normally don't finance. Would surely prefer a '12 over '11 if they ever are close in price though I don't think that will happen. Have only driven the MB E350 so far - on my list of things to do is drive the XF and the BMW 528i. Not a performance junkie per se - just want a nice ride that drives nice and looks decent as well.

You pay a pretty significant premium for a CPO vehicle with dealer margins etc. Wonder if it's worth looking non-dealer (or at least non-Jag dealer) for a used model. You still get the vehicle's warranty coverage (assuming it's not over the 4yr/50k for a 2010 model). But that might give you the cash to aim for a 2011 or 2012 instead. Also worth noting that the 2011 comes with 'Platinum Coverage' which gives free servicing/maintenance for 5 years / 50k miles and includes wear and tear items. If you are managing to a budget I'd imagine this is a real advantage. Others will know more (I have a 2010 model). Finally - just my bias, but if you can stretch to the SC model you won't be disappointed! Good luck!

When I was looking - about 3 months ago, the range here in Texas, Dallas Area, was between 30k-35k. The reason Benzes are cheaper is that their reliability has suffered in recent years. Jag on the other hand tied for most reliable luxury car in 2009 according to JD Power, beating out Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, and Toyota.
I was going down the same road with wanting a 2010 or 2011 for the warranty, but found I was able to get the 2009 XFS I wanted with a 3 year extended warranty through Land Rover for $31k out the door.

I just found this thread and thought, geez I could've started this one myself! I'm looking at a 2011 XF and would love to hear any advice or opinions. I'm also looking at a 2010, but the price is about the same as the '11, as well as the mileage, so I would like to know the differences (if any) that would make me lean one way or the other. MY doesn't mean that much to me unless there were some big improvements or changes from one year to the other.
BTW This is my opinion, feel free to rip me apart for it, but when it comes to buying a fairly new used car, I believe that the dealerships that sell that same car new have more at stake than the other new car dealerships or used car dealerships. This is my rationale -- if you buy a used Jaguar from a Mercedes dealership (for example), they'd "love" to have that car turn out to be a piece of crap so you go back to them and they say "See, told ya you should've bought a Mercedes!" The Jaguar dealership wants you to come back to them for service and also be happy (relatively speaking) with the vehicle to keep you as a customer for a new(er) car in the future.
I might be full of it, but that's how I feel. I know you can save lots of moolah by going to a non-Jaguar dealership for a used Jaguar, but that's not moolah that I want to save unless there's a reason (see below).
Question: can non-Jaguar dealerships offer certified used Jaguars that are covered the same as the ones sold at Jaguar dealerships? Just curious, because that's one thing that might sway me to buy "elsewhere" if the right deal (moolah savings) came along.

The 2010 and 2011 model years are very similar - the bigger changes were for 2012 (new front end, improved touch screen nav etc). Other difference is that the base model 2010 still used the older 4.2L engine - other spec levels and the 2011s all have the new 5.0L.
Surprised that the comparable 2010 and 2011 models cost the same - I'd expect several thousand dollars of difference in price. KBB can confirm for you
Not sure how much difference jag dealer vs non jag dealer makes on a relatively new car like this - the car is the car and shouldn't be more or less reliable if bought from say a merc dealer. If in doubt, pay for an independent inspection.
I would definitely get one in warranty - early 2010s (4 yr warranty) will be starting to run out (and maybe over by mileage too). 2011 had 5 year (and some maintenance incl too). You can extend the warranty if you buy from jag dealer and the vehicle is in great condition - should cost around 2k (some dealers ask a lot more) and gets 6yr 100k.
If you can stretch to it, the supercharged models are fully loaded and a blast to drive

I just bought a 2010 Premium, and didn't it had a 4 year warranty on it. I bought it from a non-jag dealer and bought an extended warranty for 3/36k for almost $5000. Now tomorrow when I get off work, I'm going to the Jag dealer and find out what the price is for their extended warranty, because if it is cheaper, I'm definitely going back to that lexus dealer and getting a refund on it.

A BMW will be in and out of the shop more times than you are in and out of the grocery store. Ask me how I know. And they are ubiquitous (they are everywhere, especially in New Jeresy). Think different. Get something different. Go Jaguar.

My 2002 540i was pretty dependable, so I considered the newer 5 series when it came time to buy a new(er) car. The Jag definitely beat it in looks though, and there are at least 2 5-series on my street. I'm very happy with my XFS.

Check multiple Jag dealers as well. They can do all the paperwork remotely and you might find a lot better price through a dealer not immediately near you. I tried 4 different dealers in the LA area and ultimately the dealer I was buying the car from gave me the best deal on the 7 year from date of my purchase, 100k mile warranty. Paid about $3,750. That was Newport Beach Jaguar. Good luck.
