Default Considering buying a ZF S Sportbrake 2015

Hi everyone.

I have an F-type R in IRR and we (my wife and I) are looking to replace our daily drive (an older Ford), which also is kind of her car.

By kind of accident we stumbled across an XF 3.0 V6 DIESEL S Sportbrake (275 hp) IRR/black pack 2015 rather well equipped, and it got our attention. Really good looking car. It has done 60.000 km (38.000 miles) and seems to have been very well taken care of. The seller is the same JLR dealer that I use to service the F-type, and I am very pleased with them. It also comes with a 2 years / 50.000 km warranty (same coverage as a new Jaguar). The price seems rather good.

Being active on the F-type forum, but with rather limited knowledge and experience of other Jaguar models, I thought this might be the place to get some good advice.

Any "pro and cons", issues with reability, special things to look out for etc?

All advices will be apreciated - thanks!

Arne, you will have much better luck over on the Pommy XF forum where they are quite knowledgeable about the 3.0 diesel: Jaginfo - Jaguar XF Forum

Arne,
My first Jag was a 2010 XFS, with the 275 PS 3.0 twin turbo diesel.
Great car but for one problem - the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
It clogged up regularly until I figured out a way to fix it, long story short I put two additives in with every new tank of diesel and that seemed to work. But it was a bit of mucking about pre-mixing and taking a jerry can with me to the gas station every time I wanted to fill up.
Other relatively common problems with the 3.0 diesel include cracked rocker covers, gummed up EGR valves, split turbo hoses and failing turbo actuators, lots more info about these things over on the Pommy forum.
There is also a bit of lag when you try to take off from low speed, a combination of turbo and gearbox lag, pretty much all Jag diesels do it.
Other than those diesel engine related things there really isn't much that goes wrong on a 2015 XF, and when the diesel engine is behaving itself it is a torque monster, 600 Nm out of the box and cheaply tuned to 700 Nm.
So If I were you I would quiz the seller about any DPF issues with the car, although being a JLR dealer it is unlikely they will fess up to any problems.
Last but not least, if you/your wife only do short journeys and never or rarely take the car for a decent blast you WILL have DPF problems, so if this is the driving style a Jag diesel is not for you.

The DPF means you need to do regular highish speed runs. Even then they're known for pain.

The turbo(s) have been mentioned and are another source of grief.

I don't know what air quality is like in Oslo but here it's dire - caused by diesels so the gov'ment is (slowly) punishing owners. It's not going to get easier on diesels.

Thanks for some good advices. The DPF problem is also a well known issue for other car brands. We used to have both a Tiguan 2.0 tdi and a Touareg 3.0 tdi, and I was an active member on forums for those cars. Many reported issues with the DPF, but we never had any problems. Might be luck or driving style?

We did test drive the ZF today, and it was a positive experience. Felt very solid and pretty quick and easy to drive. Lots of comfort and great seats.

There are some pro and cons with this car. Probably higher running cost compared to some other cars we are considering, but higher comfort and nicer style. It also helps that it comes with a 2 year warranty.

At the end it will come down to what we will have to pay for it. We gave them a low offer, and if they accept, it will most probably be a good buy. This kind of car don't sell easy in Norway, and that has a heavily affect on second hand price - which we have to consider, as we will need to sell it sometimes in the future.

But if we get it for the price we offered, we will get a very nice car for the money involved (less than 50% of the price new).

Will see what happens next

From the testdrive today:
