Default Converting to LED headlights

Hey Guys,

I've struggled for four months to convert my low beams to LED bulbs from the standard H7 - the reason for this was the adapter ring required for the LED bulb.

The OEM ring on the car has pronounce collars or ears that slot into the hooks on the headlight and all the adapter rings I bought had flush collars - so they would not work. Eventually, I found a supplier on eBay (the only one that sells these adapters) which enabled me to fit LED's on both low beam and high beams.

As usual, I did a video for anyone who might be interested in the same conversion.

Here's a link to the adapters needed for the low beam conversion (the high beams use different adapters which you can find just about everywhere) when searching eBay.

Here's a link to the video which shows how to they fit and the bulbs I used.

I hope this helps anyone wanting to convert ;-)

Great video! I went to you tube to find your video how to take the headlight housing off, but i think it was lost in the maelstrom of videos that you've posted. It would be better to see someone doing it rather than taking the Service Manual's word for it.

Anyway, what brand of LED bulb did you end up using? I am contemplating ditching the halolgens, and if you're getting the same beam pattern and brightness as the halogens using the stock projectors, that seems like a worthwhile mod.

Hey there, thanks for watching. If you click on my channel picture you can find all my videos. But I'll put a link to that video at the end of this one as well as in the description to help everyone.

I don't know the name of the high beams but I'll put links to those in the description of the video as well.

I used Auxbeam for the low beams and they are excellent. Same color as xenon (6000k) but they provide brighter light than xenon's.

I'll add the links in the next half hour as I must trawl through my eBay purchases ;-)

So, did you convert the low beam from H11 to H7, hence the need for the adapter collar?

Hey there - my car already had H7 bulbs in both the lo and hi beams. The hi beams are easy to convert because the collar used is a generic one. The lo beam however uses a different setup with two hooks on either side in which the ears of the collar glide into place and hold it there.

The seller on eBay that I found was the only supplier I could find that supplies these collars that fit the XF's lo beams. I bought two sets so that I could have some spares. The Mercedes E Class and XF use the same adapter so it was coincidence that I found these - I had to look at the eBay pictures really carefully to see if the ears on the adapter rings had high collars or not.

I can honestly say its the best upgrade I've done to my XF so far. I didn't think the LED's were bright after fitting them, but when driving at night, you see an immense difference.

Hi Hilton, I just wanted to ask if you will still happy with your LED lights a year later? Any issues with the heat or the fans on the heatsinks themselves? I am currently looking into install the Auxbeam F16 bulbs or go the HID route....

Hey kvwavey - yes, I absolutely love them. It's the best thing I ever did. They are way better the xenons and the bulbs themselves have proven to be quite reliable. Shortly after I did the install, I changed the solid heatsink bulbs in high beams to the ones I fitted in my lo beams (Cree bulbs) so now I have four bulbs with fans and they are amazing. They are brighter than those with solid heat sinks. The fan units seem to do a better job of dissipating heat as the blow the heat away from your wiring whereas the heat sink bulbs can burn your wiring if they happen to touch.

I love driving at night just so that I can use my lights and the other night someone refused to dim their brights in the opposing lane, but turning my own car's brights on quickly convinced him to dim his brights because mine were way brighter than his and probably seared his retinas for good - he won't be trying that stunt again.

After initially having fitted those with the foldable heat sink design in my brights (before I did the video), I can also confirm that you should rather stay away from them. They too will make the conduit on your wiring brittle and eventually you'd have to rewire your entire headlight.

Most modern cars fitted with LED lights have multiple fans in the headlight to disperse heat, so fitting bulbs with little fans makes sense. And so far, the one's I fitted have proven my hunch right and have been reliable. Here's a link to them once more in case you are interested in buying a set to try out and ps, they aren't noisy at all like some guys say.
They are expensive, but you get what you pay for:
