Courtesy Lights stopped working

I've searched around the Forum and can't find a similar problem.
2009 XF. Up until recently when I unlocked the car, the puddle lamps and interior lamps turned on as expected, or when you opened the doors exiting the car the interior lamps came on and then dimmed off after several seconds.
Now neither happens. The interior map lamps, front and rear still work manually, so I know that all the bulbs didn't blow out and that the fuses for them are still intact. I checked the fuse block diagrams for something that would indicate that there was a fuse or relay that controlled the "all on" function for these lamps, but came up with nothing.
One hint that may help is that the front right map lamp had started to intermittently come on by itself while the car was running. You could manually turn it off and all was well for several days and then it would come on again. Don't know if it's related or not, but thought it might help diagnose the overall problem.
I suspect a control relay or board. Anyone with any pointers to where the problem may be or what to look at?
Thanks,
Stew

Thanks, Colin. I actually read the book when I got the car, but didn't remember this feature and certainly didn't turn them off intentionally; but somehow I did turn them off.
A couple of seconds of touching the center lamp and the courtesy lamps flashed and I was back in business.
Thank you for the speedy and very useful response.
