Default Dealer service costs

Had to go to the dealer to get the TPMS software update and got great service. I decided to try see what maintenance they could do for me. Here are the two prices

Transmission fluid change 1200
Tstat replcement and cooling system flush 695.

Am i out of date or is this rediculous. I get these cars are a pita to work on but really?

Tranny service is crazy if they use the Jag Trans fluid. My dealer gives an option for approved "aftermarket" fluid and it cuts the cost by over half.

But they also told me that jag has "lifetime" fluid in there and does not have a service interval suggested requirement (which I consider BS).

I was quoted $275 for tranny fluid flush/refill from an independent shop for my 2010 earlier this summer. Sold it before I had it done. (Can't remember if that was with a new filter/pan)

Couldnt be a filter as they are 110 online. The trans fluid they were quoting 10 qts (they meant liters) at 50 a qt. The same fluid is available for 19 a liter online. But at that it was almost 500 in labor which is excessive. I guess its the cost of owning a "luxury" brand.

Never heard of a tranny "flush." Usually it's just a drain and fill. Sound excessive to me!

I assume you mean for the jag as the flush is typical and most vehicles. They open the cooler lines and "flush" with new fluid.

Exactly if you drain you get maybe half the fluid out? Same as changing your coolant a draining will not get all of it out you have to drain and fill until you get all of the old out.

My dealer uses the BG Transmission Service and it warrantees the transmission for 30,000 miles for any problems after each service ...It is as Brian mentions..It's done via the cooler lines and old fluid is flushed out with a conditioner first, then the final fill with the new fluid...$287.00 for the whole deal.

I had this done every 30,000 or so miles on my old X-type and the tranny was solid.

Doesn't the service entail dripping the Pan and changing the filter? Independent quoted me ~$700 for the service. I think about $300 labor. Wanna say the filter/Pan was about $300 also.

Yes any tranny service should include a new filter and a drop of the pan to inspect the magnets for metal filings.

Then a fluid change or a flush if you want to go that way. I never flush and always just change fluids.

Filter change is not necessary unless you have some very high miles before the first fluid change....Like I said, I did the BG services on mine every 30,000 miles in both the old JAG-X with 90,000 when I sold it, and my Hummer..which has over 110,000 miles and still has the original filter and the transmission is also rock solid like new.

I was told by my Jag tech buddy, that there are magnets in the bottom of the pan to collect any metal particles...I haven't proven it one way or the other..I'll trust his word on that.

Hey DPK,
Are you saying that the 60k transmission service isn't necessary? Asking because the shop that did my PPI said that the car was due for the trans service.

On a separate note, is ~$700 a reasonable price for the service?

I would have done my transmission service at 30,000 miles, then at 60,000 miles and again at; 90,000 miles, etc...You see, every 30,000 miles from the start, have the tranny serviced and it should last you the life of the cat.

I'm saying changing the filter isn't necessary if you get the BG service every 30,000 miles from the start.

Right.

Clogged or even significantly dirty trans filters are sort of rare. I can't ever remember seeing one, to be honest. Chances are, if the filter *really* needs to be changed, the trans ain't long for the world and new fluid and/or new filter isn't gonna help much, if at all.

Cheers
DD

LOL...Well if its under warr. I'd shop the dealers for a better price. If your warr is done you could download the service manual and do it your self, or find an independent shop, But if you pay those prices I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
The trans fluid I've done and it's posted on here. Cost me about $200 bucks, Filter/pan is $100, and I used Redline 100% synthetic trans fluid, the stock ZF gold is a synthetic blend.
The hardest part of the trans service is getting the car level on jack stands..lol

I've done a lot of trans services of all brands and the ZF in this car is by far the easiest!
