Default Doing Own oil change on '09 XF Supercharged

I am totally new to the Jaguar world as I just picked up my XF-Supercharged.

I understand that the 4.2L is not a sealed engine so I can change oil like any other car - basic oil filter, drain plug, and etc.

Any basic guidenace would be much appreciated.

Basic questions I have so far:

How many liters of oil?
5-30W synethetic recommended?
After-market Bosch Oil filter - p/n# A6000-110085 just as good as OEM
Why is teh drain plug gasket so expense - $4.8 for a washer??
How easy to do the oil change myself?
What should I be carefull of?

Any good YouTube video on this?

You actually need the drain plug itself. The XF does not have a reuseable drain plug. The X Type was the same.

Bosch makes good filters but if the car has warranty use a Jaguar filter.

Synthetic is not spec'd but it is a no brainer to use synthetic in Canada.

5W 30 is the correct weight for the 4.2. Jaguar specs Castrol so their Syntec or Edge should work fine. I have had good results using Mobil 1 also but not so far in my Jaguars. Castrol is a traditional match for Jaguar.

The sump holds 6.0 liters with the filter according to Jaguar. Actually it takes around 6.3 liters. The engine holds oil in the heads for a while after shut down and my car has been overfilled four times with dealer oil changes. Put 6.0 liters in, check the dipstick to be sure oil shows above the minimum mark. Start the engine and run it for a short while, shut down and wait at least 15 minutes before checking the oil level. Only then try to top it up or you will overfill it. I leave mine about 200 ml down from full if checking hot, I only fill to the top mark on the dipstick if the engine is stone cold.

I stopped changing my own oil when it became such pita to dispose of the used oil. The work is unpleasant and the cost savings marginal.

Is that really necessary? I know that many X owners don't change them.

Thanks. Do you mean the drainplug gasket (washer) that needs to be replaced or the the actual drain plug itself?

I haven't hoisted the car up yet but it is crowded to get to the filter or the drain plug? Thanks for the tip about only using 6L and wait till the oil runs back down to the sump before checking the dip stick.

A few months old thread but was wondering if you could share your experience in changing the oil in your '09 XF supercharged, I'll be attempting the same soon. Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

I picked up a Bosch 72209 oil filter the other day and 10qts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30. I'll be changing the oil in the next day or two. I'll report back soon. Capacity is about 6.5qts.

I changed my oil last night on the SC 4.2. It's very straight forward without any surprises.

-Jack car up and support with jack stands.
-Remove bottom tray: two small torx bolts at the front, two nuts (10mm heads) in the middle, and then 4 bolts (10mm heads) near the back. The tray is fairly large so it's awkward to move around.
-Drain oil: The oil pan bolt has a 13mm head and spun out without too much trouble allowing the oil to drain out.
-Remove old filter: The filter is very easy to access. It's in front of the pan laying on it's side. Mine was on too tight to remove by hand so I had to use a oil filter wrench to break it loose.
-Install new oil filter
-Install drain plug: I reused mine but technically you are supposed to install a new one.
-Fill with oil: Mine took a little over 6qts to reach the max line on the dipstick. About 6 quarts of oil came out of the car when I drained it.
-Start and check for leaks
-Re-install bottom tray
-Remove jack stands and lower the car

Thanks for taking the time to write up the procedure. I'll be doing the same soon, I'll probably have a new drain plug on-hand in case the old doesn't look it could do the job a couple more times. Thanks again.

Nope, I jacked the car up with a jack. I suppose I should have put that in the post above but you'd figure it out pretty quick when you tried to get under the car.

I will be doing the same as you, just ordered the Bosch oil filter (3 actually) and I have a lot of Mobil 1 5W30 in the garage (use it in my Z06 and Trailblazer SS) so as it meets the ACEA A1/B1 spec listed in the owners manual of the XF in it will go! I change the oil very often on all my vehicles so the one oil for them all is great.

I enjoy changing my own oil, I can do it frequently and I save some money to boot. Whenever the Mobil 1 5W30 jugs go on sale at Walmart I stock up!

Did my oil change, I did not see any good point to life the car using my floor jack so borrowed my buddies Race Ramps which made it very easy to get the car off the ground. Rolled under there on my creeper, pretty simple to remove the tray under the engine just as Blackcoog said. I re-used the oil drain plug with no issues, it has a rubber seal that looked fine to me. The oil filter is easily accessible as well, it mounts horizontally so I could not prefill it with oil as I do on my other cars. It took about 6.5 quarts to refill the engine, I ran it for quite a long time and revved it pretty good to before I put the tray back on, no leaks at all. Did notice some minor seepage on one of the trans oil cooler lines where the metal line connects to the rubber hose, no big deal, wiped it all down all nice and clean and will take a look at it at the next oil change.

All in all a pretty easy job and very satisfying to boot!
