Default DPF protection

Hi,

I am driving XF, mileage is about 45000 miles now. Should I use some kind of DPF solution to clear up soot? Is it recommended for Diesel Engines. I had DPF issue once with my Audi Q7 and resulted in over £2000 of garage bill from Audi. I don't want any problem with my jaguar. Please advice. Thanks.

The key question is if it tries to regenerate? If your driving pattern is mostly long journeys I'd say you are OK anyway. If lots of shorter journeys do you often hear the ticking noise of cooling metal as you get out of the car, combined with a smell like burnt rubber? That would be interrupted regeneration cycles. If that happens to me I go for a 30 min drive with speed staying above 40mph within the next couple of days. Also check oil level, if at or above max change immediately. When refilling only fill to halfway between min and max. Some shops are not up to date and fill to max because they haven't read the instructions. Just my 2p worth.

Some early cars were subject to regeneration not starting, resulting in clogged filters. (Software update fixed it IIRC.) If you haven't had eny messages like restricted performance coming up I assume yours is working properly. My driving pattern has changed so I get the service message after about 10k km, when I change the oil and filter. The oil level has risen perceptively. I do not use any additives. There have been discussions elsewhere whether some oils give more sooting than others but I haven't seen anything conclusive. I do not use any additives other than injector cleaner every six months or so. That incidentally will help clean out the exhaust pathways. In particular the EGR valves seem suceptible to sooting up completely. Off hand I cannot remember what brand I use, I have tried a few and landed on one that is sold by a local workshop.

thanks, that is quite helpful. I will go and get injector cleaner tomorrow. I know it might not be required at the moment but it is precautionary step.
