Default Due for my 30,000 Mile / 48,000 KM service

Called the dealer and was quoted $690 plus tax for what seems to be some oil and filters! Am I missing something or is this the world of Jag servicing?

Ask for a list and match it to the owners handbook. Air and cabin filters will need replacing. Brake fluid flush every 2 years. Oil and filter. That should be it. My Jaguar dealer tries to upsell me on fluid changes and flushes that are not specified and I don't let them do these. If they could get the oil change right it'd be good, so far they have been unable to do this job right.

I asked what the oil change on its own was and the answer was $280. That's some special oil!

Which model do you have? If the 5.0 then yes it needs very special oil. Fully synthetic 5W20 or perhaps even 0W20 and only Castrol makes it at the moment I believe. The high efficiency design aspects of the 5.0 require this oil.

The 4.2 uses ordinary 5W30 conventional oil as it is a very old design.

Then the oil will be pricey according to UK owners.

They also have to use a machine to suck the oil out as there is no drain plug, which adds to the cost as well.

I see a sucking machine as a time saver, not an added cost because you don't need to put the car on a lift. That said I guess the equipment would carry a cost. Lets just all agree that the mark carries a premium on even very basic service items.

For that price you could buy your own sucking machine...

JohnDow Industries JDI6EV 6 Gallon Fluid Evacuator

I'm sure you could get a cheap hand pump one that would do the job as well.

By the way Mobil 5W20 meats Jaguars spec for oil on the 5.0L's and you can get that at most places. (Spec: WSS M2C925-A) Get it at Walmart if you want to find a good deal on it. I hate going there but the oil is much cheaper there.

Mobil 1 5W-20

I asked the Jag dealer to do an alignment on my XFR a few months ago:

Service Rep: "Sorry Sir, our machine is broken - it needs a new part and we don't know when we will get it fixed because it is a very expensive part for a very expensive machine"

Me: "Yes, the cars you are servicing are very expensive machines too"

Service Rep:"........"

To their credit, they did the alignment for free when they did finally get it fixed, a few months and a set of lunched tyres later...

Er 25,000 mile service. Km x 0.6 = miles

The 5.0 liter engines all have oil vacuum tubes for extracting the oil. I believe they use cartridge oil filters too, just like the old days but accessible from the top. The engines do also have a drain plug though. No dipstick.

4.2 cars have conventional dipstick tube spin on oil filter and drain plug.

I meant the comparable service to what I am due for is 30k miles.

Woops. 48,000 km is indeed approx 30,000 miles. Wires crossed. The post I was referring to mentioned 40k miles, presumably, which would be only an oil change on US and UK cars where servicing intervals are given in miles. You were correcting that to refer to your original post and I overlooked that 8,000 difference in the raw number.

Abject apologies etec etc

My point is I think they want to use the oil for the 5.0 liter motors on my car. That is why I am asking.
