Default Engine light and known + unknown error codes

So I had a slightly worrying moment earlier when my engine light came on... and that was it. No weird sounds, no reduced performance, nothing else.

Got a hold of an OBD2 scanner and apparently there were 4 error codes, two of which I can't identify.

We have:
  • P0301 - Cylinder #1 Misfire
  • C3501 ????
  • C32c1 ???? (Yes, lowercase c)
  • P0400 - EGR Flow Malfunction
I've heard no misfiring at all and everything sounds just fine under the bonnet, a little toasty in our current weather but nothing amiss. I do have an active brake pad change warning (a couple of days ago) so I know that needs doing.

I'd guess something threw a momentary wobbly, as after a clear followed by a full off and on of the car + a 20 minute journey, nothing has shown up.

Advice/ideas on what the other codes mean? Need to see a repair shop for something?

Thanks,

Simon

How old is the battery, there is a good chance you need a new battery these cars act funky when the battery is old.

These things sometimes occur and it could be a number of things including a bad ground connection or even a battery which is getting ready to fail. Since you cleared the codes and they have not come back up, I would simply monitor to see if they occur again.

You can't normally feel or hear misfires yet they happen and cause damage so treat with concern.

Thanks for the help all.

I've done some checks on the battery and the electrics are 13.6V-14.6V while running and 12.7V while off according to OBD2. Voltage drops to ~10V during ignition but that's very brief. Doesn't sound like an issue?

Anyone have a clue on the C error codes?

Nothing else has shown up yet with another 45 odd minutes of driving thankfully!

Cheers,

Simon

Try non-running volts after standing overnight but 10V is too low.

First for any code you get, erase it and make sure it repeats.

As was posted above you sometimes get codes that don't really mean anything so force the car to tell you what is going on.

Do you know if the codes have ever been cleared on your car? They could be quite old.

Any parts store that can read the codes can also erase them.

Erase everything then drive some more then report back what codes you have.

Yes, the error codes have been cleared and there were none previous to the original incidence that I know of (unless they did not trigger any warning light).

The engine light has returned - too rich bank #1 & bank #2. Again, once cleared did not reappear (at least not yet).

Looks like it happened at engine start.

Morning voltage is 12.2V - is that ok?

Thanks all,

Simon

As an update for those interested I took it to a Jag specialist to do a battery test and see if they could see anything wrong. Yes the battery was buggered, so a battery replacement and a moved MAF sensor later*... And the light is back this evening (about two weeks later).

*Too rich is one of the sets of codes that may or may not appear. I think they're pulling at threads here.

They asked me to not plug any reader in before they see it next as they believe it is stopping them getting full fault information.

Inclined to take it to a main dealer now that the battery change + other little bits are out of the way (touch lights) that the main dealer would charge ££££ for in the hopes we get a more solid diagnosis... Not sure.

Does anyone know of any other causes of random engine lights without any other outward effects? (e.g. no restricted performance).

P codes are from the Power Train

C codes are from the chassis

U codes are from the network

B codes are from the body

Please post the codes again if you can.

C3501
C32c1

Are ones I am keenly interested in, but I can find no source of these.

Went into a main dealer who reckons it is something electrical given the diverse set of problems I've seen, which have gone into "Restricted Performance, DSC Unavailable, Forward Alert Unavailable" (which was when the car was turned at a service station, turned it off and on and it was fine) all the way to buttons greyed out on the touchscreen (and aforementioned random slew of error codes).

Sigh. Back in next Friday. They're hoping to find a dodgy connector or something.

Which module(s) are they from and what does IDS/SDD (*) say they mean?

(*) Jag tool - but you can buy it too...

Unfortunately I don't have this tool (at least not yet...).

A fuse had blown which was causing a 'permanent' MAF sensor error. That's been sorted... So hopefully all good. We will see!

I may end up getting the IDS/SDD cable + software if the issue persists, I'm hoping to have no need to

Smile Looks fixed!

Well it's been over a month since I was at the garage and I've had no lights whatsoever.

So it looks like the issues* were the fault of a MAF sensor fuse.

*probably excluding the odd centre console blip with nav/ac unavailable, but that has mysteriously vanished. Somehow related? Seems unlikely, but I have no alternative answer.

Very strange indeed to be able to cause such a wide array of faults! My assumption would be modern ECUs are very sensitive to issues with sensors.

So another thing to check if you get weird engine lights: engine fuses.

Thanks for the help all. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute some more interesting posts soon that aren't cries for help!

Of note I have taken the beast around a track, so I may try and get that up here soon.
