Engine Sound
I recently purchased my XF and I am unsure on how the engine should sound. I would like to compare what a good 5.0L sounds like compared to mine. I was trying to record my engine sound for all to listen but I have not been lucky. However, I will keep trying because I want your comments and suggestions.
Thank you

It sounds like the 2012 loaner I had. So it's normal for the 5.0L based on my experience. I didn't care for it. The fuel injectors chatter pretty loud on those 5.0L's (high fuel pressure). It's fairly common on any DI engine. I prefer the sound of my SC 4.2L.

I can't figure out what my issue is- I've tried it on two XP boxes and two Windows 7 boxes, WinRAR, WinZip, and even 7-zip (my WinRAR and WinZip are a bit out of date). Max' dream car, if it's not too much trouble, would you mind posting the WMA file uncompressed? Please don't take offense, but I'm a bit of a privacy freak, and don't like to give out my email address. Thanks in any case!

Thanks again for the offer. I had a friend extract it for me without issue; clearly something is up with my setup. And of course now I realize what you recorded and were asking about is the sound at idle/low revs. What I've been looking for is a loud/full revs exhaust clip online, but have only turned up the S/C version 5.0 on either the XF or XJ. Both sound amazing through the rev range, but was hoping to find the N/A 5.0 on the XF for my desktop:
(0:53 and 2:50, great audio pickup, worth putting on your headphones- love that you can hear the thunder and crackle as the driver comes off the throttle in the distance)
(0:27 and 1:09, not bad, but lots of wind noise)
To my ears, comparing NA to NA engines, there's definitely some tradeoff with the Jag V8s vs. the Germans and the Japanese; both sound a bit less refined (not as well-muffled) at idle with the 4.2 thrumming and droning while the 5.0 rattles. But mat the throttle, and I find the rewards more than worth it, as they sound much more muscular than the competition. The 5.0 in particular is much angrier throughout the entire rev range; noticeably more vocal at low revs, deep growling (a Jaguar cliché but true) through the mid-range, and then a high-tech zinging (is that a word?) at high revs more similar to how the German and Japanese NA mills sound all throughout. Interestingly, some of the latest FI motors from BMW and Mercedes are actually tuned quite a bit louder than their previous NA models for character.
Here is a video of the N/A 5.0 but on the XJ, and features some of the sound at idle:
Sounds pretty similar to your clip? Not the most exciting, but hope that’s helpful for reference.
