We have updated our reliability stats for the Jaguar XF to include owner experiences through September 30, 2012.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2011: 51, about average, small sample size

2010: 121, worse than average

2009: 88, worse than average

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

With the 2009 XF, the percentage with no repairs is about 48, while the percentage of lemons is about 6.

We'll have further updates in February and May. We'd love to provide more precise stats and cover more model years--just a matter of getting more owners involved.

My 2011 XFSC has been less then reliable but if I was looking for reliability and gas mileage I would have bought a hybrid Camry. My Jaguar can be at the dealer every single week as long as I don't pay a dime and drive a 2012 XJL while its in the shop who cares...

There is a very short list of 5 passenger cars that can do low 4 seconds 0-60, mid 12's in the 1/4 mile and none of the others have the class of a Jaguar.

Honestly, those numbers just sucks dirt...

We also have two other cars in the family...

2008 Acura TL 68K miles (bought new)
#dealer visits for warranty repair or recalls over 5.5 years = 1 (airbag recall)
#out of warranty repairs @ local mechanic over 5.5 years = zero
Total running costs (minus fuel) = $80 x 6 (oil change) + $460 (tire replacement) + $260 (F/R Brake Job) + turn signal bulb $5 + Dome light bulb $3 = $1,208
Average cost per year = $219.64

2000 Toyota Camry 209K miles (bought used in 2006 w/80K miles)
#dealer visits for warranty repair or recalls over 7.5 years = zero
#out of warranty repairs @ local mechanic over 7.5 years = zero
Total running costs (minus fuel) = $40 x 18 (oil change) + $320 x 2 (tire replacements) + $230 x 2 (F/R Brake Job) + Halogen Headlight Bulbs $30 + replacement Fuel Cap $25 = $1,875
Average cost per year = $250.00

Basically, we now expect cars to run without a single visit to the mechanic or dealer save for an scheduled oil change and replacement of wear and tear parts like brakes and tires for 200,000 miles. But, one visit is understandable, two is bad, three is gets the marque a bad reputation.

The Acura and Toyota are fine utilitarian vehicles. They will get you from point A to point B affordably and reliably. That is typically not why one buys a 60k XF. Of course you want it to be reliable but it should be assumed that the cost of maintenance, repair and overall ownership is going to substantially more than your standard utilitarian vehicle. Speaking by only my own experience, I owned a 2001 S-Type for eight years, a new XF premium for two and a half years and have found them to be very reliable and as important--a pleasure to drive--which is why I choose jaguar in the first place.

What I am saying is that the automobile industry today has set the bar very high in terms of vehicles being reliable and low maintenance. I also disagree that because one spends 60K on a Jaguar it should somehow be less reliable than more plebeian cars. If anything, the reverse should be true. And, I think Jaguar is trying to make their cars low maintenance and trouble free -- afterall they did specify extended drain duration synthetics and 15,000 mile oil change intervals. I just think that while they have come a long way, they are not there yet.

I'm sorry. I had a Mercedes.

Brand new 2012 E350 and a used 2009 XF Supercharge

I didn't really have any problems for XF。but for the new merc I went to the dealer ship 2 times in a year. My friend had an new 911 991 i believe which seems tone reliable but really not cuz his windows doesn't work sometime.

Realize that these stats are reporting that even for the 2009 about 2/3 of owners have had no repairs in the past year.

I had a 2013 Camry for about 6 months. I bought it new. After 4 months, it smelled like old socks whenever you turned on the ac or heat. Seeing other people driving the same car on an almost a daily basis got old real fast. Even though my Camry was fully loaded it never gave me the awesome feeling the jaguar gives me each time I drive it. I have had no reliability issues so far. But, even if I do have any issues, they'll pick up my car and drop off another. Toyota service on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. I have owned a 2000 MR2 since 2005 and had more bad experiences with Toyota dealerships servicing my car than I'd care to discuss. So many problems that after one year I have done all of my own service.

Hi mkaresh - what period of time do these results represent? Are they an actual year, or is it the last 3 months annualized? Reason I ask is that the 2010 XF (which I have) was showing 96 repairs per 100 cars per year in Dec 2012 and is now showing 38 repairs per 100 cars in Dec 2013. I'm struggling to believe that in its 4th year of life the car has suddenly got much more reliable... So wondering how believable these numbers are or how we should interpret the massive variation from period to period? Even the 'unreliable' and 5-year old 2009 models seem to suggest that half the owners have no repairs on a typical year - not bad for a complex car like this. How many people report data for a 'moderate' sample size in this analysis?

Thanks.

2014 XF SC 3.0 AWD. I've had it over a week. It's now in the shop with less than 500 miles on it. CEL is on with a code they have never seen or heard of. Something to do with the coolant temp circuit. I was curious if I had the record for the quickest CEL from purchase.

I had a '14 3.0 AWD Loaner this week while my locked caliper was being replaced, 14 miles on it. CEL came on at 187 miles, when I took it back they told me it was the second this week. Have no idea why (maybe bad gas, maybe whoever filled it didnt tighten the cap, but was disappointing to say the least). Though I've had very little problems with my '12, even the caliper I wouldnt attribute to Jag and am extremely happy they covered it and new rotors.

They look at the past year, and are annualized, since for some cars we don't have a full year of data.

It's possible that the parts most prone to problems failed earlier in the cars' lives. I haven't looked closely, but I think with both the 2009 and the 2010 the repair frequency peaked fairly early due to repairs for fit and finish and minor electrical issues, then dropped. Both now seem to have leveled off. The 2011 never had a similar surge. The 2012 might now be having one--but for this year and the 2011 we really do have overly small sample sizes, so it's hard to say.

Our reliability stats for the XF now include owner experiences through March 31, 2014, making them nearly a year ahead of other sources.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2012 XF: 80, high, small sample size
2011 XF: 45, moderate, small sample size
2010 XF: 47, moderate
2009 XF: 46, moderate

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2009 XF: 67, < 1

Thank you, once again, everyone who has been helping. Next update in August.

We've updated our reliability stats for the XF to include owner experiences through September 30, 2014.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2012 XF: 55, moderate, small sample size
2011 XF: 72, high, small sample size
2010 XF: 65, moderate

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the XF to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2012 XF: 61, high, small sample size
2011 XF: 63, moderate, small sample size
2010 XF: 76, high
2009 XF: 51, moderate

We'll have further updates in May and in August. XF owners keep asking me why we don't have stats for all model years. To make this happen, we especially need more participants for the 2011 and up.

To see how competitors compare, and to sign up to help improve this information:

Jaguar XF reliability ratings and comparisons

To view the new graphs, select "reliability trends" in the breadcrumbs at the top of the linked page. Or check out the attachment--an usual case of improvement as the cars have aged. I don't see any common problems to explain the jumpiness in the 2010's trend line, so this could be because the sample size is right at the minimum. We've had quite a bit more 2009s in the past, but members have been selling these more often than buying them, so at this point we're running low on these as well. Need more of everything
