Default Jaguar's new engine for the 2012 XF!

... Is a 2.2L Turbo diesel four cylinder based on the Mondeo's and Freelander's 2.2L diesel. It'll do 0-62 in 8.5 seconds and 52 MPG according to Jaguar. Sounds god awful I already disliked the V6 diesel.

It should be an affordable XF lol . Still, based on the performance specs it outperforms X300 3.2

I think this is really designed to comply with the upcoming US CAFE standards of 35 mpg for cars. If Jaguar manages to sell half and half mix of diesels and petrol XFs, then they should be able to make the 35 mpg target.

I think you'll find that the 4-cylinder diesel will not be exported to the USA. It is designed to meet a segment of the market that likes the Jaguar style but doesn't need or want the performance. Mercedes, BMW and Audi all supply smaller 4-cylinder diesel cars into the market in Europe and Jaguar HAS to follow to keep the sales up.

USA has cheap fuel compared to us, so you probably don't understand the fuel mileage issue we have here. I filled up today with 55.8 litres of petrol and it cost me £73. I then checked the fuel mileage on a brim-to-brim basis and it worked out at 23 mpg !!

By the way, did I hear you mention "elderly people" ? I couldn't possibly comment, but I retire at the end of June !

Besides, you have to drive one of these new generation turbo diesels before you turn your nose up at them. I've driven Ford 4 cyl diesels in the Focus models and a FIAT Cronos turbo diesel. Not only do they return amazing fuel economy they also go like stink (pardon the play on diesel fuel smells). For the usual European roads (bendy) the diesel often works better than the equivalent gasoline model because of the torque curve matched to appropriate gearing. For North America with its cheap fuel and long straight roads diesels are not as appealing. The new engines are nothing like the diesels we North Americans might have driven over here in the past.
