Default Judder going uphill at low speed

My new secondhand 2008 Jag XF is a joy to drive - unless stuck behind slow traffic going up a hill, where it judders dreadfully. This is where I am slow enough to be in first or second gear, but it doesn't seem to matter which gear it is. Is this normal, or is there something wrong?

Unfortunately I live at the top of a hill at the end of a windy road populated by underpowered LPG taxis (I live in HK) so it is something I encounter on most days....

Could be time for spark plugs. Pull one and check the gap.
