Default Key frequency

Hi guys,

I want to order a new key online for my car (only have one)... and I was wondering if anyone has any idea what frequency are used... in Canada? Or is there a way to figure out?

2012 XF Portfolio.

Thanks!

Be careful of what you order online especially on eBay. I ordered a Jaguar key FOB from a seller that has 90%+ ratings for $24.00 (non-OEM). I read comments from buyers' 5 star ratings key fobs from different car brands. When my Jaguar Key FOB arrived, it looked exactly identical to mine, even the electronics inside. Called Jaguar dealer, but they declined since Key FOB wasn't bought at their parts store. So, I called a locksmith that has a device that can programmed all makes & models but the Key Fob didn't worked. Lost $24.00 and $50.00 for the programming fee. I ended up buying at the dealer for $300+ including programming charge.

Regarding about the "frequency", I don't have any knowledge.

I can add new key to the car myself, I have an Autel unit. I can take a fall for $20 - $30 if needed.
I just need the key... with the right frequency. In the owner's manual doesn't say anything about it .

Probably in your case it didn't work because you had the wrong frequency!?

Yes, you need to open your key fob, there's an FCC ID code printed on the pcb board, google that, and you'll get your frequency mine was 315 mhz, i got a knock off key from aliexpress, programmed it with odb star h100, work's wonderfully.

I got the new key and managed to pair it with the car without any issues.
Was added as a passive key.

I have had good luck with the chinese made keys too. A little worried at the beginning but after several different keys they all seemed to work fine.
But it is a risk compared to getting a factory key.

Is not really that risky... when it comes to technology, we have to admit that Chinese products can be very good, especially since most of the electronics nowadays are made there.

I think the major thing that you need to pay attention to is the actual frequency. If you get it wrong, then no amount of "reprogram" will make the fob work.

HINT for those who will come across this post... if you order from online like aliexpress or something, choose the guys that are actually also gonna cut the blank for you (you send them a clear picture without distortions of the original key). Is maybe extra $5 on the original price.

I didn't and I regret it. I was looking to see how much is to cut the blank key and everyone around Richmond Hill (Canada) is charging me around $60 to $85 + tax... just to cut the freaking blank key!!! What a ripoff... with that money I can order a new fob with the key cut as well... so ticked off. Anyway, lesson learned .

If you have AAA/CAA roadside assistance, it covers a locksmith up $50/$100/$150, depending on which plan you have.
I found a locksmith to laser cut two spare blades for $100 and AAA re-imbursed the full amount.
Just make sure the receipt says something to the effect of “lost key/spare key replacement.

I don't have AAA/CAA... but I guess is a very good thing to do for those who has. Nice!

Yesterday I was searching online for ideas and found a few places (ebay / aliexpress) that you can send them the picture of the key and they cut a blank for you for like $8-$10 CAD with free shipping. I'm gonna go with that... I refuse to pay so much money just for a key cut... total ripoff in my opinion.

Open up the existing key fob, circuit board, and button side. The frequency will be printed on a small piece of paper. Use this frequency to order a new one from Amazon or eBay.
