You just need to open the door when the key is nearby, ie, I leave mine in my handbag. I was expecting to press the button on the handle to unlock it but as it was already locked it would sound the beep beep noise. It works on any of the doors, as long as you have the key on you, simply pull the handle. To lock the car you can press the button, and it will give the two louder chirps.

Although I am mostly familiar with the passive lock cars, there are the 3 types that I have seen in print. Key lock, keyless and passive.
First, here are some pics of handles I pulled from archived ebay posts, one have the button and the other does not. The embossed key is on the removable cover over the emergency key hole.
As John Williams stated, not all cars have the passive option.
